Dr. Kevin Kaplan will speak on cartilage injuries in the hip -Interarticular hip pain in the runner.
Dr. Kaplan graduated from Tulane University (New Orleans, LA) with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in cell and molecular biology and... was distinguished as Summa Cum Laude with Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of numerous National Honor Societies. He attended New York University School of Medicine (New York, NY) where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and was distinguished in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Kaplan completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases (New York, NY) where he was chosen as an Executive Chief Resident, contributed over twenty orthopaedic publications, earned research awards, and received specialized training in orthopaedic trauma surgery at Seattle's Harborview Hospital. He completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (Los Angeles, CA). During his fellowship, he assisted the head team physician in the orthopaedic care of the 2009 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, Univeristy of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University. Working among innovators in the field of sports medicine, Dr. Kaplan has been trained in cutting-edge arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, as well as in joint preserving and reconstructive procedures in the shoulder and elbow. He specializes in the non-operative and operative management of injuries in youth and adult patients of all skill levels from recreational to professional athletes. He emphasizes not only surgical treatment, but also the importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Dr. Kaplan has presented his research at numerous national meetings and is a fellow-member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

1st Place Sports The Native Sun Mandarin Run 10K and 5K will be held on November 21st at the Mandarin Presbyterian Church located at 12001 Mandarin Road. The new 5k will start at 7:50 AM with the 10K following at 8 AM. A one mile fun run for the kids will start at 9:30 AM. This is a new location for the Mandarin Run. Lots of parking will be available at the church.

Come run/walk the 4th annual 5K Turkey Trot and 1 Mile Fun Walk! Run starts at 9:00 AM, and the walk starts at 9:15 AM. Meet in the parking lot of the court house on St. Johns Avenue and start from there.
Please pre-register at the Parks Department by November 25th. You can also register the morning of.
Registration Fe...e is $20.00 per person for the 5K run and $10.00 for the walk. Each pre-registered participant will be guaranteed a commemorative tshirt. Late registrants and race day registrants are not guaranteed a tshirt.

Have you always wanted to run the Gate River Run, but didn't feel that you knew how to get started or didn't have a training partner? We have the answer!
JTC Running and 1st Place Sports are proud to host the Gate River Run training program!
The first organizational meeting will be held Tuesday, January 5th at 6:30 PM at... 1st Place Sports, 2016 San Marco Blvd. You do not have to attend the organizational meeting to take part in the program. Just sign up and you will be contacted (via e-mail) prior to the class start date directing you to group runs and classes.
This program is designed for the first time River Runner to the experienced runner out to set a personal best. Participants will be divided into groups based on your current ability and goals. The program will be coached by John Metzgar (one of Jacksonville's best runners) and will also feature group leaders to help with each pace group. There will be instructional classes and group runs each week leading up to the Gate River Run on March 13, 2010. The class meets Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM for a short presentation and a group run in downtown Jacksonville and on the weekends (mostly Saturdays, but sometimes Sunday) for a group run at 8 AM. The weekend run will be rotated among some of Jacksonville’s best running routes (Orange Park, Fleming Island, Ortega, San Marco, Riverside and the beach.)
The cost of the program is $65 (or $50 for JTC Running members). The fee includes the following:
* Experienced coaches providing guidance and training advice.
* Personalized training program.
* Group runs and classes.
* Membership in JTC Running (Jacksonville's largest running club).
* Performance running top “Training for the Gate River Run" shirt.
* Group Discussions covering the following topics:
o Training Plan Development
o Running Shoe Selection
o Nutrition
