Take a deep breath before reading this article. The truth is, you might cry. Then return back, because you are part of a community working to build hope and show solidarity with those among us whose homes are already threatened by rising seas.

A few folks have asked if there are others organizing vigils in your communi...ty. Since we just shared the invitation the other day, the best way to find out is to register your action and then ask your friends, local organizers & organizations to join you: http://350.org/vigil

So many thanks for preparing to shine a light in the middle of the Copenhagen climate talks, when the world will need it most!

WHEN a coconut tree dies, the decay starts at the top. First the leaves fall, then the fruit. All that is left is a desiccated trunk, cut off at half-mast. In a low-lying area flooded with seawater, the dead palms look like natural tidal gauges, the high water mark visible on their stranded remains.

The solutions aren't gonna come from simply asking our governments, and they're not gonna come from the market/corporations - we need to build a new lifestyle at the community level and utilize civil disobedience everywhere there's a major emitting operation. But I agree, don't give up!

Yep, those talks are pretty important. They going to get together to come to sort of an agreement about what they should talk about at future meetings. The leaders of these countries will never be responsible for any significant change, that power rests with us. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/15/world/asia/15prexy.html?_r=2

Seth - what i am referring to is "development" as manifested so far by industrial humans. "renewable" energy programs big enough to replace current energy use require a massive input of energy - more carbon output - in the form of materials, transport, work, so on. education and reforestation are not "development" in terms of what the people with ... Read Moremoney and power seek to develop. do you really think the G20 is ready to throw money at reforestation and passive solar? are you aware of any reforestation programs with the capacity to offset current and projected emissions enough to prevent a 4 - 6 C rise in global temp? please also include the EROEI (energy returned on energy invested) calculations for such efforts.
Copenhagen is not a meaningless exercise - it will be another shinning example of how our world leaders and hierarchical organizations are complete failures at coping with climate change.
as James Lovelock says, "we don't need sustainable development, we need a sustainable retreat."

As part of a weekend of climate action organized with our partners at TckTckTck, people all over the world will gather at iconic and strategic locations in their communities, and will light candles of hope to stand in solemn solidarity with the citizens of the nations whose very survival is threatened by the climate cr...isis.

These nations are calling for a “survival pact,” for commitments by the developed world to cut emissions enough to get the atmospheric concentration of CO2 back to 350. They know the simple, mathematical truth of global warming: 350 = Survival.

Fiercely eloquent piece by Alex Steffen on the role of youth on the road to Copenhagen, and way beyond:

"Copenhagen isn’t some do-gooder meeting; it’s the first major battle in a war for the future....

"To be young and aware is to know you’re being lied to; to know that a bright green future is possible; to know that we... can reimagine the world, rebuild our cities, redesign our lives, retool our factories, distribute innovation and creativity and all live in a world that is not only better than the alternative, but much better than the world we have now...

Your fight is ours, too. Don’t give up."

350.org GOOD Magazine has done a *Great* job creating an illustrated guide to the Copenhagen Climate conference -- everything from the key players to the major issues to a brilliant piece by 350 Messenger Alex Steffen about how COP15 represents the first major battle in a war for the future (http://j.mp/2f8LhW). Definitely worth diving in!

Louisa, I strongly disagree. The little mermaid is sweet and stoget is wonderful. All the museums are fabulous. I have never seen such a clean city. The subway is like a gallery. Notice the bike paths. South of the mermaid is Gyfeon, my favourite sculpture of all time. I can`t wait to go back.

new film from friends at Oxfam -- "In places like Gabura in south-west Bangladesh, climate change is costing lives – now, today."

this a critical message to share as we countdown to Copenhagen and use this major moment to build a strong and lasting movement. taking action for a 350 world is as much about safeguarding o...ur children's future as it is about protecting our fellow global citizens right now.

As President Obama is wraps up his trip to China today, he and President Hu should be looking at Chinese and American civil society for an example of how their countries can work together in tackling the climate crisis. On the 350 International Day of Climate Action, over 300 events took place in China along with nearl...y 2,000 across the United States, making October 24 the largest day of climate action either country had ever seen.

It's clear that the US and Chinese public are ready for climate action. Now, it's time for our leaders to step it up. In case they needed some extra inspiration, here's a slideshow of October 24 photos from both countries (http://j.mp/1pPor2).

President Obama's trip was an incredible opportunity to foster a new partnership between the US and China based on building a clean energy economy that can tackle the climate crisis. The past few days have seen a few small steps in that direction including announcements about a joint clean energy research center, agreements on energy efficiency, and some good words (at least) about China and the US working together in Copenhagen to make progress on a "comprehensive agreement."

But as many of us know, the time for small steps is over. The International Energy Agency -- which provides the data which many countries and top businesses use to shape their energy policy and investments -- estimates that every year we delay tackling climate change will cost the world $500 billion. If we wanted small steps, Chinese and US citizens would have organized 10 or 20 rallies on October 24, not hundreds and thousands.

That said, Obama's trip has helped laid a solid foundation for future collaboration between the US and China. It looks like the leaders are beginning to finally catch up with their citizens!

well, cows, chickens, pigs etc are meant to roam 'free' not be closed up in pens where they can't move and be pumped with hormones & antibiotics to make them fatter faster and then slaughtered so we can eat them - that's unnatural. If you eat meat - eat free range & organic. :)
