4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division This article from the Armed Forces Press Service describes our mission as the "proof of principle" for the Advise and Assist Brigade (AAB) mission. The successes and lessons learned by the 4,000 Soldiers in the Highlander Brigade are shared with units that are deploying to Iraq with the AAB mission.

The first new "advise and assist" brigades already in Iraq and others slated to arrive soon have a big leg up on their new mission, thanks to the groundwork laid by the 1st Armored Division's 4th Brigade, which provided a test bed for the new concept.

4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division

4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division Indirect-fire attacks on our installations in Iraq are an ever-present danger. Whether it's a nearby improvised explosive device attack, or one by rocket or mortar, the need for a team of quick responders is a vital one. Each unit has designated Soldiers assigned to a team for this very purpose, and periodically train ...on the skills needed for that role. Familiarity with communications equipment operation, knowledge of combat life-saving procedures and drilling through possible attack scenarios where casualty recovery is a necessity comes with the job description.

4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division Civil Affairs and the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division "Highlander" Soldiers who support them act as a liaison between Iraq's civilians and military units, both informing the local commanders of the status of the civilian populace.

CA also enables assistance to locals by either coordinating operations with non-govern...ment organizations or directly distributing aid and supplies.

Working with civilian experts such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, police, firemen, bankers, computer programmers, farmers and others, Highlander Soldiers provide expertise to host-nation governments and can also look at the need for critical projects such as roads, clinics, schools, power plants, and water treatment facilities.

CA provides cultural expertise, assesses the needs of the civilian populace, and if necessary, also handles civilians on the battlefield and refugee operations.

This week we look at the "assist" aspect of the Highlanders' advise and assist mission. Presented here are the first of more Friday Feature photo sets to come highlighting our civil affairs activities.
