The ACLU of Illinois and the Center on Halsted are proud to present a conversation with transgender advocate Diane Schroer. Colonel Schroer, a highly-decorated, 25-year Army veteran, was hired as a terrorism research analyst for the Library of Congress, only to have the job offer rescinded when she informed her future ...employer that she was in the process of gender transitioning. The ACLU represented Ms. Schroer in her successful Title VII sex discrimination lawsuit against the Library of Congress.

Ms. Schroer will share her experiences in an intimate discussion at the Center on Halsted (3656 N Halsted) on Sunday, November 15th from 6 to 8 p.m. Joining Ms. Schroer will be John Knight, Director of the ACLU of Illinois' LGBT project, ACLU staff attorney Sharon McGowan, and Christina Kahrl, Transgender Program Volunteer Liaison for the Center on Halsted.

A massive amount of state funding is going to religious institutions. This is money that is designated for dispersal by a single individual -- a state legislator.

This has become a far greater problem than it was when I attempted to contact the ACLU-IL regarding a terrifically significant case! Can you please explain why the ACLU-IL only lists 6 issues when other ACLU websites list over 20? I also have concerns that the individual that I spoke with may have not been representing the ACLU-IL as she gave me erroneous information and then did so again over a year later when the problem was was even greater and it was the very same person that returned my call!

Please enlighten me as to how this could have happened... as the actions of this volunteer intake worker would suggest that the ACLU-IL is not truly committed to fighting for the civil liberties of Illinois citizens!

Thank you,... Read More

ACLU of Illinois It's time for civil unions in Illinois.
State Representative Greg Harris had indicated he will call the civil union bill for a vote during this October's veto session. Contact your legislator again and urge them to support the Illinois Religious Freedom and Civil Union Act. http://action.aclu.org/ilcivilunion

It is long past time for the Illinois General Assembly to pass the civil unions bill - granting gay and lesbian couples and their families basic legal protections like:

The ACLU absolutely supports full marriage equality for LGBT couples and their famiies. But passing a civil union bill raises the floor on that debate, and provides basic legal protections that folks desperately need right now.

ACLU of Illinois I have a question for you. I recently married my long time partner for seven years in the state of Iowa. We elected to changed our names to match Enlow-Birnbaum. We went to the DMV today in the town of Belvidere IL and they turned us down because one they couldn't accept the marriage license because t...he state of IL that is fine because we went to the Social Security office and had our name changed on it. The lady was really rude and told us that the Social Security office doesn't matter because they change anyones name. I want to know do I have a case if you could please message me on here what kind of actions I should take to get this name change official on my drivers License since I have had it changed every where else.Read More
