A new study reveals that the melody of a newborn's cries seems to be influenced by the sound of the parents' native tongue. The findings suggest that crying infants may be imitating the patterns of the language they heard before they were born.

I, too, was happy to see that she is birthing with a CNM and took childbirth classes. Hopefully this will be a positive hospital birth story with a lot of eyes watching.

American College of Nurse-Midwives This article features ACNM member Lonnie Morris. How would you rate the quality of reporting for this story?

It's the latest trend. Many celebrities have opted for it and now more and more regular moms are saying "there is no place like home" when it comes to having a baby. Just who is opting for home birth and how safe is it? CBS 2 HD decided to explore this growing movement.

The celebrity angle is disappointing, but there are some positive aspects to the article. For example: "They are educated women who do a lot of research, that are making this choice because of what they believe is a better choice for them."

Simone, I agree with you. Unfortunately, our society is more likely to embrace something if their favorite celeb is doing it. Silly, I know, but tt benefits us all if people want to emulate their favorite star and have a "birth party" at home.

If the United States had Sweden’s distribution of births by gestational age, nearly 8,000 infant deaths would be averted each year and the U.S. infant mortality rate would be one-third lower.

Many of the 29 countries with lower infant mortality rates than U.S has more midwifes in charge of low risk birth than U.S... Conclucion, midwifes is the solution.

And clients who see midwives for care are more likely to return for care, since someone really listened! There are good statistics that group prenatal care helps high risk women in low socio-economic communities recognize PTL sooner and also help each other to avoid bad habits that contribute to causing PTL.

American College of Nurse-Midwives Midwives, do you think hospital gowns serve a purpose during labor, or are they unnecessary inconveniences?

Source: birthbabieseverythinginbetween.blogspot.com
I often hear women say they would have loved to wear their own clothes when they were in labor, or they HAD to wear the hospital gowns, because they weren't ALLOWED to wear anything else. Then I got to thinking about hospital gowns and the type of symbolism that they bring to the birth table.

One of the world's best-known experts on obstetrics has announced he thinks Dads need to get out of the delivery room and leave the women to it. Dr. Michel

It should definately be up to the Mom and her sig. other. She should be concerned with labor, not serving as a hostess. I do to beleive many family members, friends or whoever can slow down labor by becoming over bearing. I seen women do doing a great job with family coaches, but too many all trying to help at the same time can become a coaching ... Read Morecompetition, overwhelming mom. Mom is be told to do this, no do that, no do this, you don't want that and my favorite in their interpretation of monitoring, telling mom how bad they pain should be, encouraging pain levels to rise faster thus less tolerance of labor. Some are there just to see, not to encourage, but don't won't to miss one thing. Some women want their mom, but then MIL wants in too, because it's her grandchild too, seen those arguments pleanty of times, but it is the mom's body being exposed and her amount of modesty that matters. Some will invite the world with no problems, other say if you were not at the conception, then you can't be at the birth
Some Dads are just not that into it, others are great, then some try to be in sole control of the whole thing, believing they know nore than they do, telling their wives what they will or won't do (abusive I'd bet). Some are just scared of the unknown.
The local hospitals have limited the numbers to four visitors at a time to help keep the mom from being swallowed by all the support people. Some adhere, others don't.
I try to keep crowd control by getting close to mom and just ask her . So many say they just need to rest some. so Mom & chosen support person stay in the room, the others are out to the waiting room. In a ten minues, they one by one start in trickle back into the room.
I am surprised by Odent. He must to educate the Dads more during the pregnancy. I believe some Dad are just looking for attention too when they talk about how they will pass out, don't know if they can handle the blood. For some undlying factors may make this true, attention seeking reminds us they are an important part of situation too, so "don't forget about me."
