AT&T Sets the Record Straight on Verizon Ads

To Our Customers:

As the U.S. market leader in wireless data service, we typically don't respond to competitors' advertising. However, some recent ads from Verizon are so blatantly false and misleading, that we want to set the record straight about AT&T's wireless data coverage.

The key facts are:

  • AT&T's wireless data coverage reaches 303 million people – or 97% of the U.S. population, where they live and work. Our data coverage consists of 3 different types of technology:
    • 3G. 233 million people or 75% of the population are covered by AT&T's 3G network, the nation's fastest.
    • EDGE. 301 million people or more than 96% of the population are covered by EDGE.
      • With both 3G and EDGE coverage, customers can access the Internet, send e-mail, surf the Web, stream music, download videos, send photos, text, talk and more. The only difference – with some data applications, 3G is faster than EDGE
    • GPRS. Covers 303 million people, allowing you to talk, text, e-mail and access basic websites optimized for wireless.

AT&T is the #1 network for smartphones, with twice the number of smartphone customers than Verizon, our closest competitor. Some of the reasons include:

Most popular smartphones. Unlike Verizon, AT&T offers the most popular smartphones in the industry.

More wireless apps. Unlike Verizon, AT&T customers have access to more than 100,000 applications, more than with any other wireless company.

Talk and E-mail at the same time. Unlike Verizon, AT&T's 3G network lets wireless customers simultaneously talk and surf the web or do e-mail.

Fastest 3G in the nation. Unlike Verizon, AT&T has the nation's fastest 3G network.

Thank you for allowing us to set the record straight. We appreciate your business and will continue to work hard to deliver the best wireless data experience in the industry.

An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility Customers

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.

We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.

We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

AT&T STRENGTHENS 3G WIRELESS COVERAGE IN NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY AREAS

Deployment of 850 MHz Spectrum for 3G in the Metro NY, NJ Areas Substantially Improves In-Building Wireless Coverage, Adds Capacity to Support Surging Demand for Mobile Broadband

NEW YORK, N.Y. , September 1, 2009 — AT&T* today announced a substantial strengthening of its 3G mobile broadband wireless network where it has deployed spectrum in the 850 MHz band across large portions of metro New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. As a result, customers in these areas should experience better connectivity, performance and enhanced in-building wireless coverage.

This most recent network enhancement is part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation and investment into its 3G wireless network – the fastest 3G network in the nation according to recent independent testing. More smartphone customers have chosen AT&T over any other U.S. competitor, and AT&T is committed to driving continual enhancement of network capabilities to meet these customers’ ever-growing mobile broadband needs.

“AT&T’s ongoing investment to build broadband networks helps to create jobs, fuel economic growth and enable our customers to quickly access the content that matters most to them,” said Jay Summerson, vice president New York, AT&T external affairs. “Our customers have embraced smartphones and upgrades like the additional 3G spectrum deployment allow them to enjoy the benefits of these devices and mobile broadband for years to come.”

The 850 MHz spectrum was deployed for 3G use at more than 1,600 cell sites in metro New York, Long Island and New Jersey. It is considered a high-quality spectrum, which generally results in better in-building coverage. While specific benefits of the additional 3G spectrum will vary by location, AT&T 3G customers should see improved quality and coverage throughout New York City, Long Island and New Jersey where 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed. AT&T technicians nationwide responsible for monitoring network performance for service quality and coverage have seen significant increases in total 3G data traffic in areas where the 850MHz spectrum has been deployed.

“Where we deployed the additional 850 MHz spectrum, we saw an immediate increase in wireless data activity across the AT&T 3G network in those areas,” said Tom DeVito, vice president and general manager for AT&T in New York and New Jersey. “The additional spectrum helps to enhance the 3G network so that our customers have the best experience when they make a call, check an e-mail or surf the Internet on their AT&T device.”

This deployment is one part of AT&T’s ongoing initiatives to enhance the speed and performance of its network. Recently, AT&T announced plans to further upgrade its 3G network nationwide with HSPA 7.2 technology to deliver considerably faster mobile broadband speeds. The upgrades are planned to begin in the fourth quarter, with completion expected in 2011. Additionally, AT&T is continually optimizing and adding cell sites in New York, New Jersey and across the country to maximize performance for customers. AT&T is planning to add nearly 1,900 cell sites nationwide this year, and we’re adding new backhaul connections across the country to support the increasing volumes of mobile data traffic.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers 3G data roaming in more than 100 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 215 countries.

Across the U.S., AT&T’s 3G network is available in more than 350 major metropolitan areas. For more information about AT&T’s 3G coverage in metro NY or anywhere in the United States, consumers can go to www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer. The online tool can measure the quality of coverage based on a street address, intersection, ZIP code or even a landmark.

AT&T STRENGTHENS 3G WIRELESS BROADBAND COVERAGE IN AND AROUND ATLANTA

New Spectrum In The Atlanta Area Improves In-Building Wireless Coverage, Adds 3G Capacity To Support Surging Demand for Mobile Broadband

ATLANTA, GA, August 11, 2009 — AT&T* today announced a substantial enhancement to its local 3G wireless broadband network with the launch of additional wireless spectrum in the 850 MHz band. This new spectrum adds significant capacity to the network to support ever-growing demand for 3G mobile broadband service, and provides improved in-building 3G wireless coverage for customers across the metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas including parts of Fulton, DeKalb, North Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Fayette Counties.

The network enhancement is part of AT&T’s continual efforts to enhance and expand the scope, capacity and speed of its 3G wireless network – the fastest 3G network in Atlanta, according to recent data compiled by leading independent wireless research firms. It is also part of AT&T’s ongoing investment to build the broadband networks that will create jobs and fuel economic growth, and enable its customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

“Our mission is to connect people with their world, everywhere they live and work, and to do it better than anyone else,” said Sylvia Russell, president-AT&T Georgia. “This substantial network upgrade is part of our commitment to deliver the nation’s fastest 3G connectivity along with the highest possible levels of service quality and reliability.”

“A thriving economy is driven by the ability of businesses to connect, and the investments AT&T continues to make in Georgia help us attract and retain jobs and build strong communities,” said Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue. “By enhancing existing networks and bringing innovative communications technologies to Georgia, AT&T is helping position our state to be a leader as the economy recovers.”

The 850 MHz spectrum has been added to the existing 1900 MHz spectrum across more than 540 cell sites in and around Atlanta to deliver a substantial increase in overall network capacity in these areas. Overall, the effort enhances 3G wireless broadband coverage across more than 3,800 square miles. The 850 MHz spectrum is part of the highest-quality spectrum band available. While specific benefits of the new spectrum will vary by location, AT&T 3G customers should receive improved quality and coverage. AT&T will continue work to fully optimize the new spectrum over the next several weeks.

“We know many of our customers depend on wireless as their primary communications connection to work, family and friends, and our mission is to ensure that every time a customer hits the ‘send’ key, whatever the application, it just gets done, “ said Keith Holmes, vice president and general manager, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets for Georgia. “We’re enhancing our network every day to help customers do more with and get more from their wireless connections.”

In markets where the 850MHz spectrum has been deployed, AT&T technicians who continuously monitor network performance for service quality and coverage have seen significant increases in total 3G data traffic.

“Atlanta consistently ranks as one of the most technology-savvy cities, and investments in technology and broadband continue to position our region for success,” said Sam A. Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber. “We are truly becoming a national hotbed for technology innovation and investment.”

The AT&T 3G network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content, such as AT&T Video ShareSM, a first-of-its-kind technology that allows users to share live video during a wireless call.

AT&T’s wireless network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies, which includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. As a result, only AT&T can offer 3G data roaming in more than 70 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 200 countries, in addition to AT&T’s continuously expanding U.S. 3G footprint.

AT&T also enables unsurpassed choice and openness in the range of devices, services and applications compatible with its 3G network. AT&T offers a wide variety of devices from more than a dozen manufacturers, including handsets that are compatible with six different operating systems and five different e-mail applications. Our Media Mall 2.0 offers more than 90,000 content options, and customers can download virtually any application over the Internet. Additionally, AT&T supports a community of more than 13,000 application developers via its devCentral portal.

AT&T’s 3G network is now available in more than 350 U.S. major metropolitan areas. AT&T plans to deploy 850 MHz spectrum in the majority of these markets over the course of 2009.

According to the 2008 Internet Crime Report, instances involving Internet crime and fraud are on the rise. In fact, the total dollar loss from all referred cases of fraud was $264.6 million in 2008 — up from $239.1 million in 2007. Protect yourself and look out for these top scams:

Phishing:
Also known as “spoofing,” phishing is a common trick Internet scammers use to "fish" for consumers’ financial information and password data using fake company e-mails and Web sites. The scammers send e-mails that appear to be from well-known companies but contain links to fraudulent Web pages disguised to look nearly identical to legitimate companies' sites. The sites ask consumers to enter current financial and personal information such as user IDs, Social Security numbers, bank or credit card account numbers and ATM passwords.

AT&T advises consumers and businesses to use caution if they receive any e-mail requesting personal and/or credit card account information. AT&T never sends e-mail requests to our customers asking for personal account or credit card information. Consumers can also make sure that a Web site is secure by checking to see whether there is an "s" after the “http” in the address and a lock icon at the bottom of the screen. Both are indicators that the site is secure.

SMiShing:
Phishing scammers have even taken the leap from wired services to wireless, with the cell phone equivalent dubbed “SMiShing.” This new form of identity theft also attempts to compromise consumers' financial information and password data by directing them to a counterfeit Web site or to a toll free number. Consumers receive text messages (also known as SMS messages) that direct them to the counterfeit Web site trying to get their personal information.

AT&T advises texters to avoid clicking on links in an unsolicited text message. Just like phishing, consumers can make sure that a Web site is secure by checking to see if there is an “s” after the “http” in the address and a lock icon at the bottom of the screen.

Cramming:
Cramming occurs when unauthorized charges appear on consumers’ wireless or home phone bills. To avoid being a victim of cramming, consumers should pay close attention to their bills. When consumers believe they are victims of cramming, they should call the service provider associated with the charge and dispute the charge. It is necessary for the consumer to contact the actual service provider to conclusively resolve the issue and to avoid possible collection actions by the service provider imposing the charge. On AT&T bills, the associated service provider’s phone number is printed on the same page as the charge. AT&T works with customers who call us about their bill to satisfy concerns they may have, including adjusting any disputed charges from their bill.

To avoid being a victim of cramming, consumers should pay close attention to their bills. If unauthorized charges appear, customers should first call the vendor to have the charges removed from their bill. AT&T customers should contact us if they are unable to resolve any issues with the vendor directly.

Slamming:
Much like cramming, “slamming" involves changes to customers’ phone service without their knowledge, in this case by switching their communications providers. Scammers will call and misrepresent themselves to customers and ask questions about their account information.

When a caller offers to switch your phone service to a new provider or requests sensitive information, ask questions. Always verify the identity of the company, what it offers and at what price, and get contact information for the service representative. AT&T customers can report slamming to customer service representatives who will assist in switching them back to their preferred service.<

809 Area Code:
The 809 area code is a legitimate area code for the Dominican Republic. However, in this scam, consumers usually receive a message telling them to call a phone number with an 809, 284 or 876 area code in order to collect a prize or find out information about a sick relative. The caller assumes the number is a typical three-digit U.S. area code, but the caller is actually connected to a phone number outside the United States, often in Canada or the Caribbean, and charged international call rates. Unfortunately, consumers don't find out that they have been charged higher international call rates until they receive their bill.

AT&T advises customers to return calls to familiar numbers only. They may call directory assistance or long distance operator to check the area code location.

E-mail Viruses and Worms:
The recent Conficker worm is just the latest example. Viruses and worms are computer programs that may arrive in an e-mail attachment and can be destructive to computers. Viruses can hide in a computer's program or system files, and often look like something they are not, such as a picture, screen saver or even a Web link. Worms are software components capable of infecting a computer and then using that computer to infect another computer, spreading rapidly without assistance.

AT&T offers e-mail protection that customers can configure so that it detects viruses and worms before the e-mail is delivered to the computer, and also offers downloadable PC protection for AT&T High Speed Internet customers. Customers can also make sure they are safeguarded against e-mail viruses by making sure their software is always up-to-date.

AT&T STATEMENT REGARDING 4CHAN.ORG

Beginning Friday, an AT&T customer was impacted by a denial-of-service attack stemming from IP addresses connected to img.4chan.org. To prevent this attack from disrupting service for the impacted AT&T customer, and to prevent the attack from spreading to impact our other customers, AT&T temporarily blocked access to the IP addresses in question for our customers. This action was in no way related to the content at img.4chan.org; our focus was on protecting our customers from malicious traffic.

Overnight Sunday, after we determined the denial-of-service threat no longer existed, AT&T removed the block on the IP addresses in question. We will continue to monitor for denial-of-service activity and any malicious traffic to protect our customers.

We’re excited to bring these phones to the U.S. market with AT&T.”

C905a Cyber-shot™ – capture brilliant images with your phone
With versatile new features and a sleek design, the C905a raises the bar set by other camera phones as the first phone that looks, acts and feels like a digital camera. The 2.4-inch scratch-resistant mineral glass screen provides users with a crystal-clear view of their subject, and dedicated camera keys and shortcuts make it easy to point and shoot. This full digital camera experience is packaged in a stylish 3G slider phone.

Highlights of the C905a are face detection, a xenon flash with red-eye reduction and Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) storage compatible up to 16 GB, so an extensive portfolio of photos can be stored and easily transferred to and from your computer using the included USB cable. The USB cable also enables easy printing from the C905a directly to PictBridge compatible printers. BestPic™ technology captures seven successive photos with one click, allowing the shooter to choose only the best photos to keep. The Smart Contrast feature compensates for areas that are too bright or dark.

The C905a, which Outside Magazine recently awarded “Gear of the Year,” is also loaded with an array of multimedia offerings, including AT&T Video Share, video recording, AT&T Music, FM radio, Mobile Email, AT&T Navigator and instant messaging. With AT&T Video Share, consumers can share their summer experiences in real-time streaming video.

W518a – Stay in tune with your social circle
The W518a is a unique, all-in-one device that enables people to stay connected and express themselves on the go. Packed with social networking features in a thin design, users just open the phone to view Facebook® friends’ status updates and profile photos. One click from the W518a’s standby screen allows social butterflies to update their Facebook® status. Also it’s easy to upload photos to your profile directly from the W518a’s 3.2 megapixel camera.

The W518a is also loaded with other cool innovations to deliver a highly interactive music experience. Advanced Shake Control technology lets users shuffle, skip and control volume with a flick of the wrist. Music buffs no longer have to be tied to their computer to buy music – the W518a lets users purchase and download music over the air from Napster™ Mobile and eMusic Mobile™ via AT&T Music.

In addition to Shake Control for music, Gesture Control technology lets users reject incoming calls or send the alarm to snooze with just a wave of the hand over the W518a’s camera lens.
