I am much more of a last-minute shopper (some say shopping "procrastinator"), but each year I entertain thoughts of starting early and being organized. I also like to make things, so much of my shopping involves stuff to make gifts. ;-D

Finding a pet sitter or kennel that you can trust and depend on is a very important task. After all, when selecting someone to watch your pets while you are away, you are selecting someone to watch over your family members. You expect at least the same level of care as you provide on a daily basis.

When we began to travel a lot a few years ago, we had used a local kennel. We were not happy with the terrible attitude of the people in the front office, but the personnel who took care of the annimals were great! Things improved immensely all around when new owners bought the kennel; the personnel are happier and we are greeted with a smile. Our dog gets treated very well. Now I really recommend this kennel when possible.

Word of mouth and asked lots of questions. We actually use a rotating group of sitters & walkers depending on the length of absence & medical needs of the animals. We don't board at our vet because they don't have overnight staff and I've never liked leaving my pets at a boarding kennel. All of our sitters have backgrounds as vet techs or years of common sense experience with companion animals. As a K9 hydrotherapist, it's easier for me to connect to folks I can trust with my animals.

So it's Thanksgiving week and my staff is asking me to list what I am thankful for. I'll be doing this for the next few days in celebration of Turkey Day.

Katie

Katie Hello there. My little terrier mix passed away on sunday morning. She had pulmonary adema and we don't know why. We had started using citronella spray collars and this is suspicious to me, even though our vet says it is unlikely. She did not have access to electrical cords or any poison (she had a coagulation test and ...her blood clotted). One of the hardest parts about dealing with her loss is not knowing why. She was only 3yrs old and on Friday morning she was running around the yard seemingly as healthy as ever. Have you ever heard anything about problems with citronella?

Oh I am so sorry to hear about your dog! I haven't heard of citronella causing pulmonary edema, but I will check my resources for any odd case reports. Any chance of dog flu or other illness according to your vet?

No the vets were stumped too. Their first thought was electricution, then rat poison, then trauma, then toxin inhalation... all of these had been ruled out because she had no exposure to any of them. She was confined in an area that I know is free of any of these. She is never let out by herself. She as well as all my dogs, was always monitored. I ... See Morejust don't know what else could have caused it. She has always had a kind of athsma. Our last vet said that she just had a sensitive trachea. Her breathing difficulty developed so quickly that I don't think that this could have been the only cause. I just don't know. I called the manufacutrer of the collar and they said that they have had concerns that people reported possible allergic reactions to the spray but that their vets could not confirm it. My own vet said that she would have had to sniff it straight from the collar to cause something like that but what if it sparayed twice and she got a good dose. I bought the collar thinking that it would be the least harmful t my pets and I really feel like it had something to do with her death. The only thing that has not been ruled out besides the collar is a possible spider bite. I know that finding out what caused her death won't bring her back but I would really like to know.

The holidays are upon us. Arranging pet care is one of my least favorite tasks. Here are some resources to help find the "best" caretaker for your pet(s) and hopefully reduce stress.

Today's wake up tactic is actually advice for what not to do. Now, knowing what not to do is an important part of any good wake up strategy.

This is a companion piece to my cat FURminator review. I wanted to show the tool "in action" with two of my cats: Barnie, a very long-haired feisty young neutered male, and Greta an elderly spayed female short-haired cat.
