Career Tips

June 2009
June's tip.
Job Stress
Have you ever felt panic before an interview or presentation? Or maybe it's just general stress about your job performance or a work review?

There are a couple of basic steps that you can take to relax before stepping up to the podium/ interview table/ or meeting slideshow:
- Prepare. Make time to think about the situation and the information you can present that will be useful for your audience. It will help ease your mind.
- Get enough sleep! Very simple, very effective in the long run. According to some sleep experts, it may even help you to live longer.
- Meditate. Even 10 minutes can make a world of difference.
- Deep breaths. In stressful situations, your fight or flight mechanism can kick in and cause your pulse to accelerate. You can try to regulate your body by calming your breathing patterns.
- Picture success. It's how world-class athletes get through their events. It could help you too!
- Put yourself in the shoes of your audience. You are probably your own harshest critic. While that might not be news to you, keep in mind that your audience has invited you specifically to speak about a subject, and are interested in what you have to say.
- Give yourself a pat on the back. When it's done, if you've done everything you can, treat yourself to some relaxation in whatever form you like: golf, dessert, a film. And there, you've done it!
