Mark Foster, group chief executive-Management Consulting & Integrated Markets, spent a week recently in Kenya and South Africa witnessing how Accenture people are using their business and technology consulting skills to make a difference, particularly through the work of Accenture Development Partnerships.“It was one of the most fascinating and impactful weeks of my 23-year career at Accenture,” Mark said of his visit.

Art of Networking

Networking is an essential business skill and can be very helpful in the job seeking process. When given the opportunity to meet new people and expand your network, consider these useful ways to initiate conversations:

- Set a goal that you will meet new people and not just stay with people you already know.

- Do your prep work. Know who is going to be at an event/meeting, if you can.

- Position yourself in places where people tend to gravitate (e.g., food or bar areas, by windows).

- Initiate a greeting and find common ground

- Ask open ended questions to spark conversation

- Find opportunities to say the person’s name in the conversation so that you will remember it.

- Bring business cards.

- End conversations by planning for follow up (if appropriate).
