With nearly 10% of Americans idled, the country faces the prospect of long-term, double-digit unemployment. Even after growth returns, many jobs won't which is why it's time for bolder action. How to get America working again

Albuquerque Academy Alumni We are saddened to inform you that former Academy faculty member, Harry J. "Pudge" Herder, Jr., passed away on July 8, 2009 at the age of 83. Many of you knew Mr. Herder as an entertaining science teacher, dedicated football coach, or the father of classmates Susan '75 and Abigail '77. We invite you to read the memories of Mr. Herder that others have shared, and add your own using the link below.

Mr. Herder was my seventh-grade science teacher and he was an incredible influence on me. I remember very well how he taught us measurement, especially the metric system, and I use some of his ideas today in a lab I do for community college students in industrial hygiene.
I also remember, of course, his entertaining (and sometimes tragic) stories ... Read Moreabout his experiences in the Korean War--how he almost died of hypothermia being transported to a MASH unit after stepping on a mine--he was too long to be carried properly in the litter. Only later did I learn he served in WWII as well. He told a hilarious story (about his brother, I believe), about practicing military salutes to their old boar, "Sir Lochinvar".
He was full of little quips and anecdotes. I remember the "butter gun", of course, though that was also used by my physics teacher. I remember he said that he might go back to Wisconsin some day, where they have "cows per acre, not acres per cow" (in NM).

Yes, the Butter Gun, Mas, who flies through the galaxy solving the riddles of science, but here's the clincher.....who remembers the notion that he would pump his old truck up with Hydrogen and get double or triple the mileage? Scientists, help me out on this one. We loved him and will miss him! Adios, Mr. Herder.
