That is no surprise and very sad. My mother was put on Depacote because she was hitting the staff at the nursing home during transfers. The movement scared her. They really didn't have time to interact in a calm manner that may have prevented her agitation. Unfortunately, most nursing homes are for profit and do not provide adequate staffing. There... See More are always those luxury nursing homes that cost a fortune and don't take medicaid, but the majority of the alzheimer's patients and family members have to deal with the nursing homes that take Medicaid. Family members really need to stay involved and I truly believe that when patients have family members that visit regularly, observe and respond to concerns, the patient will receive better care.

I just spoke to you on the phone, but for anyone else interested in younger-onset support groups, the Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter offers two support groups. Both groups have two parts--one for the care-partners and one for the person with AD. We meet at the same time in separate rooms. Anyone who is interested in the groups can contact our Helpline at 800.272.3900.
