Visit www.wmfe.org for more program information!
Baseball great Roberto Clemente’s talent and inimitable style drew legions of fans, but as this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE production reveals, he was more than an exceptional baseball player. He was also a committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination and worked for social justice. Through interviews with relatives, childhood friends, former teammates and journalists, this biography tells Clemente’s inspiring and tragic story, focusing on a man whose career sheds light on larger issues of immigration, civil rights and cultural change.

Judy

Judy The show last night on the CCC was important to me, it felt good to me - thank you, PBS.

Monica Seufer

Monica Seufer Absolutely loved the show last night about the CCC. Brilliantly done and loved the men that shared their stories.

Dennis

Dennis "The 30's" series has been superb so far, and has brought me to the somewhat nuanced conclusion that even though the themes and experiences of THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE 1930's and THE GREAT RECESSION OF 2008-2010 are similar, the reality of THEN versus NOW is like the difference between BUBONIC PLAGUE and SWINE FLU.

Christopher

Christopher The show about the Civilian Conversation Corp was outstanding. Thank you!

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you, our Facebook fans, "What do the 1930s mean to you?"

Amy S. from Columbus, Ohio, sent us this video, "Music in the 1930s," which looks at how the adversity of the times produced an explosion of creativity in popular music - in so many different genres! "I think that the '30s might be... right up there with the '60s with regard to the lasting importance and influence on American music. And it makes sense, since the '60s was such a tumultuous decade as well," she writes.

Now it’s your turn. What do the 1930s mean to you? Let us know by submitting your stories, pictures, and video to "My American Experience" on the 1930s website, or log on to browse more submissions from viewers like you!

The 1930's means to me that my mother's family left Oklahoma and her father got to finally come home to Boulder, Colorado. (He had ran away when he was 16 looking for a half brother in Illinois.) If her parents had not left Oklahoma, my parents would have not met. While it was a difficult time for both families, they had fun. They made music, put up a lot of food together, danced, camped, attended concerts, and grange picnics & events. They were adventurous & had so much fun!

Music and the radio-were entertainment that the whole family could share in the Great Depression years. People who had a radio- would give almost anything else they had before they would give up their radio.

American Experience Is our Great Recession fueling a new "lost generation" of juvenile wanderers? Some estimates say up to 76,000 are living on the road, up from some 250,000 teenagers who rode the rails during the Great Depression in the '30s.

As more families face economic hardships, experts have seen an increasing number of children leave home for life on the streets, including many under 13.
