American Geophysical Union (AGU) EVERY VOTE COUNTS! Voting for AGU's governance changes is halfway over (15-31 Oct). Please vote on the changes which would make Council focus more on science, shift much of AGU business to a smaller Board of Directors, and modernize governing documents. http://www.agu.org/elections/bylaws09/index.php

As the wheels of progress turn ever so slowly, we have our science orgs finding their way to Congress. European astronomers have found 32 new planets outside our solar system, adding evidence to the theory that the universe has many places where life could develop.

Chris Kleckner
Another point of interest is the fact that these 32 planets, like some others detected previously, were not photographed but "discovered" through the use of the High accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, which looks for wobbles in a stars' movement. The actual existance of all of these bodies is stilll speculative, I would think.

In my opinion, the existence of life is a highly overrated phenomenon - Jon Osterman (Watchmen, 2009). Existence of planets (and seeing them indirectly) itself is spectacular enough. Searching for and hypothesizing C- H based life forms elsewhere is so very overrated.
