On November 10, AFFIL and many other groups sent this letter (PDF) to two Senators regarding our nation’s higher education system. The letter addresses a broad array of concerns, and supports doing away with the FFEL Student Lending program to save taxpayers $87 billion over ten years.

YES! It's about time. Education is the one thing that can better your life, and being crushed by debt getting there is counterproductive. just another way to hold people down...those that have, gets; those that don't have, borrows... and never are free. If there is one thing the govt should be doing, it is helping people get the education they need to get good jobs. Invest in your people not banks and credit card companies!

Ronda O'Bryant We have got to put a tight leash on these banks...and I mean yesterday! We've all had more than enough abuse from them and it's time to put a stop to it!

Although it’s unlikely that the Senate will follow suit, the House voted 331 to 92 to speed up the reforms passed in the Credit CARD Act.

Way too late for some of us; they've already bled us dry. I just paid my "tribute" to Citicard...$540. It used to be $367 in January. I have charged NOTHING on that card and I have NEVER been late on this payment or any other and yet I have had my interest jacked up to 29.90%! I bring home $357 per week. Next week Chase wants their $450/mo. I have ... Read Moreno heat in my house, my furnace is broken and that's not fun in Wisconsin. Eat? what's that? Sorry for complaining, but I am not the only one, but the twits in DC haven't got a CLUE what's happening to Joe and Jane Average. i can't get "help" because I am working, but I can pay taxes for bailouts, and I can pay my bills/debts/obligations. my patience is about finished.

I bring in 1032 a month, but with what the bank has taken from me for the past few years I could own my own bank

See? THIS is what worries me: by the time our 'representatives' get a clue (if they're even at this point inclined to), most of us will be out on the street, no work, no prospect of getting work, but still expected to continue to pay our bills, bail these clowns out and act like nothing's wrong! When does it END already?!

Our friends at Americans for Financial Reform shared this video with us, and we thought you’d enjoy it, too. This short cartoon by Mark Fiore highlights the absurdity of the ways credit card companies are trying to avoid upcoming reforms.

... Arlene, the bigger problem is that we do not have control over our credit scores as we used to: pay your bills and keep a couple of cards open without delinquency, was the norm. Now, since the credit card issuers are about to lose a lot of money, they now want to charge you for having those cards, even if you pay them on time, don't carry a ... Read Morebalance and/or are an outstanding customer! Then, the issuers also have the option of cutting your limit or closing your account due to inactivity. So one way or the other, one does not have control over one's score ... which as you outlined, can cost someone a potential job prospect.

What I admire and am now a part of is the fact that movies like Maxed Out, the diligence of Professor Warren and others are now turning our collective attention and focus to the matter. There is strength in doing this in numbers.

I am sick of the way these privte lenders and such ruin people's lives and refuse to work with you. They tell you one thing and then 'because they can' they change the agreements all around til you are the loser and your credit is ruined, etc. It's one thing to owe money BUT some threw honor and integrity out the window when they got this '... Read Morepower' of lending and all. There is NO help for anyone but those who hold the common people's financial status in their very hands. NO bail outs for those who actually may need it. Makes one wonder what is actually going on in these companies and those who give them the power to do what they do- another way to control, own the people is what it looks like.

Something short of bank obliteration has to occur or be so imminent, and even then, I don't think the banks will consider, let alone say, "Sorry." As long as they feel we need them or are addicted to their high-priced services, they're unrepentant!
