Amigos de las Américas Here are some helpful life tips for you, straight from the AMIGOS 1967 Volunteer Handbook. Too funny! • Do not swallow water or snakes when swimming. • Should you find yourself involved with the birth of a baby don’t drop the baby! • Don’t use Athlete’s Foot medicine on your face • Don’t over-dry yourself to the point of chapping

Amigos de las Américas started a new fan discussion! Today at the office we were laughing about the awkward moments we experienced while we were gettng accustomed to a new culture. Did you accidentally break any social norms or say something that got lost in translation?

I was in my community San Miguel Centro in Cocle,Panama during the summer of 2008, and I was with my partner during a compamento. During the compamento ( keep in mind that the compamento was in front of 10 year olds) and we both asked to the kids, ?Cuanto anos tienes? not Cuanto años tienes? and everyone just started riendo a carcajadas

During a pre-Volunteer community visit my first year on Paraguay Project Staff, I remarked how delicious the dulce de leche was -- however, I used the Mexican name, cajeta. Definitely a conversation stopper! Decades later, my friends in Asuncion still make fun of me about that incident & request that I bring jars of (Mexican) cajeta for them to give as risque wedding shower presents.

"It was late afternoon when I arrived in the village of Angahuana. I had traveled by truck high into these green mountains and then walked along a curvy road. All I carried in my backpack was clothes, water, and a sleeping bag. ...

Amigos de las Américas Thank you all for helping celebrate AMIGOS' birthday. While we did not win the daily contest, we had a wonderful celebration and felt so supported and valued.

You helped us raise $3,809 from 95 donors. What a wonderful gift for AMIGOS! Please note that two days remain in the contest, so anyone who missed the deadlin...e earlier today should feel free to make a gift that will go toward the overall total. In fact, we could still be in the running for the $10,000 if all of our Facebook Fan, Group and cause members made a commitment to giving $10 - even more if people commit to a gift of $10 a day for the next two days. So, all is not lost! To make a donation, go to: https://www.causes.com/fb/donations/new?ts=1256829961&cause_id=370209

We just want to thank you for all the support and encouragement for AMIGOS' work. Please know that every gift will go to ensure that AMIGOS can maintain the high quality programs that you have all come to expect over the years. Thank you again for making this birthday one to remember!

in Los Cartones, Azua, DR at campamentos, we tried teaching them head, shoulders, knees and toes, but realized quicky that they had their own favorite song to song that everyone already knew, especially the little girls "yo fui a nueva york, a visitar a mi papa, y mi abuelito me enseno el baile de el chapi chapi!" jajaja very silly, but they all loved it

One of the most valuable things that I learned in AMIGOS was to "expect the unexpected!" Remembering that has served me well in a number of ways and places.

Of course I loved the human relations/cross-cultural/diversity training. And finally, I think AMIGOS is where I really learned the importance of the 6 P's!

reading "good intentions," playing the majoria/minoria game as well as "virtual community" really all prepared me well for the overall experience I would have that summer
