Keith Kimmel told me "You could get a NARP (National Association of Railroad Passengers) card for $35 for a year, that gets you 10% off ALL fares (including discounted ones) so long as you book 72 hrs in advance." Any other saving tips would be MUCH welcomed! :D

We alighted from the TexEagle in Dallas today after an adventure-filled ride from Chicago. Most excellent, and a he'll of a lot more fun than flying.

Amtrak Wow. Thanks so much for all the feedback on the Amtrak.com redesign. For those of you asking about Wi-Fi and phone reservation lookup, rest assured that we’ve already begun working on further enhancements like these. Stay tuned.

If your web site managers could provide an API (they know what that is) for train status and schedules, third parties could easily write applications for iPhone, Droid, iPod Touch, etc.

This would save you the time and expense of doing it yourselves, and you might even pick up a few bucks in royalties.

Several major transit systems have done it this way, and within weeks there were many different apps for even arcane mobile platforms. London Transport and Washington Metro are terrific examples.... Read More

Your new third-party mobile web site is OK, but (you'll pardon the pun) it contains too much slower web baggage and no fast stand-alone application features such as schedules. And if I can't get an Internet connection, your mobile web site doesn't work at all.

Please remember that your passengers are, by definition, mobile users! An Internet connection should not be a prerequisite for seeing non-volatile databases such as schedules, maps and basic station information.

I'm for the daily service on the Sunset Limited. Living in Tucson and planning travel requires daily service. Because of the lack there of, many just drive.

Keith Kimmel Anyone
know of a nice place to stay that is near the Miami Amtrak Station or
in Miami Beach and easily accessible? I have a sailaway party to attend
in Miami Beach and then leaving for an Atlantis cruise the next day.
What puts me close to all that?

It used to be another sister of the Silver Meteor and Star. But they had to cut back its sleeping, diner, and checked baggage service. So it couldnt stay with the Silver Service trains. Then they cut back its routes also.

Walter just had a bit of excitement on the Texas Eagle. We pulled out of Chicago a couple of hours ago and promptly stopped in lovely Summit, Illinois, for an hour while the local police visited the rear coach car. Just got going again. We're all guessing about what happened; I like to think they finally found Amelia Earhart.

A woman accused a male passenger of groping her; apparently this isn't the first time she's done this on the Texas Eagle. The cops in Summit, Ill., investigated and I think they put her off the train. No arrests.

In any case, we got going again and then had to stop for 30 minutes because of a mechanical breakdown, repaired by liberal applications of duct tape. Then we had to stop for nearly an hour because a car was on fire on the tracks (we didn't touch it -- honest).

If it isn't one thing it's another.... Read More

We were 2 hours behind before we left Illinois, but we're approaching Dallas in a few hours and should be on time. The wonders of schedule padding!
