In the coal fields region of the southern United States lives a thriving multi-media arts organization called Appalshop. Appalshop was founded in 1969 by a group of Appalachian teenagers who were frustrated by how their communities were being portrayed in the wider media. ...

Appalshop is greatly honored to present the Saturday night program at the Oral History Association's Annual Meeting on Saturday night, October 17. From the program: "Instead of the traditional keynote speaker, the Saturday evening program offers a presentation by and about the work of a Kentucky organization that could... not better embody the
conference theme, “Moving Beyond the Interview.” For OHA, Appalshop’s fast-paced presentation will trace a 40-year trajectory using oral history resources to create

I just finished a documentary about Coalwood, West Virginia, home town of Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys, made famous in Homer's memoir and the movie, October Sky (1999).

My film tells the story of this interesting town from its beginnings as a company coal camp to the present day and the October Sky Festival through... the voices of those who have lived there.

I just received my first printing of DVDs and I ready to start shipping! Here's my website for the project www.CoalwoodMovie.com

and my FaceBook page for the project:

His wife told me that the night this happened, Teddy Kennedy called her and offered her a flight to Alabama so she could be with her husband.

The offer was out of the blue as neither Mary Ann nor Orloff had a personal relationship with the Senator. I've always been impressed that Kennedy was on the situation so quickly and did this good thing immediately. Mary Ann was deeply touched and although she opted to stay home with her young children, she always vouched for Senator Kennedy and his humanitarian ideals."

Appalshop Appalshop joins people across the nation in mourning the loss of Mike Seeger. He was a true friend of traditional musicians and a tireless advocate for their music. He often served as a resource in Appalshop's work, helping with films, radio broadcasts, recordings, and the Seedtime on the Cumberland festival. We will miss him, though thankfully he left behind a lot to remember him by.

What a nice man he was. I met him 20 years ago at Lime Kiln. It was always nice to see him at those shows and I looked forward to them every year. I'm really glad the time I played Seedtime, Mike was on the show. He made me feel like the greatest songwriter on the planet. It was the last time I saw him and it's a real nice memory to carry around with me.

Mike did a lot of living and accomplished what a lot of us wish we could. Locally, just think of all the seeds that were planted when he persuaded Dock Boggs to get back in the studio and on the stage. A lot of us have been touched by that one labor of love.

Appalshop The Appalshop Archive has organized a reunion of photographer Wendy Ewald with her former students from Campbell’s Branch School, Cowan School, and Kingdom Come one-room School. Material from the photography workshops with children during 1975 - 1980/81 was collected in the book Portraits and Dreams published in 1985. We've started a Facebook Group to help bring folks together.

This is a place where Wendy Ewald's photography students from 1975 to 1980/81 in Letcher County, Kentucky can share pictures, thoughts and plans for activities this summer and beyond.
