The San Diego LGBT Community Center is pleased to announce that Wells Fargo has donated $50,000 to fund direct support and services – among them the more than 40 community programs The Center provides.

“Wells Fargo is proud of our long time relationship with The San Diego LGBT Community Center,” said Dean Thorp, Wells Fargo Senior Vice President. “We are delighted to be able to support the local community through continued funding of the vital programs and services The Center provides.”

Wells Fargo has a proud history of supporting community-development projects for affordable housing, schools, economic development, community revitalization and job creation. Their commitment to work together with community organizations for increased economic prosperity starts where it counts the most, locally. One of America’s largest financial contributors to nonprofits, Wells Fargo has given $200 million in grants in 2009. This latest generous donation will make a measurable difference in the lives of the 36,000 community members The Center serves annually.

“We are grateful to Wells Fargo for their continuing generosity to The Center,” said Center development director Jeffrey Wergeles. “We couldn’t be happier about their latest commitment, which will provide needed funding for programs and services that help to ensure the well-being of the San Diego community.”

AIDS WALK SAN DIEGO AND THE SAN DIEGO HIV FUNDING COLLABORATIVE GRANT
MORE THAN $485,000 TO LOCAL HIV/AIDS SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

Dec. 9, 2009 – Earlier this afternoon, the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative and AIDS Walk San Diego issued grants exceeding $485,000 to 20 local HIV/AIDS service organizations in a ceremony that took place at The San Diego LGBT Community Center.

Through a unique partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, AIDS Walk San Diego is able to increase the impact of the dollars it raises. Funds raised from AIDS Walk are combined with other supporting donations to qualify for matching funds. Those partner organizations include: the Sunshine Brooks Permanent Fund of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation, Alliance Healthcare Foundation, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Johnson & Johnson, McCarthy Family Foundation, National AIDS Fund, the Parker Foundation and Bill Hardt Presents.

“In a year that has seen ongoing economic challenges for so many and devastating state budget funding cuts for HIV/AIDS services, it is especially meaningful to be able to present these checks to organizations who truly do the work of providing direct care and service to those living with HIV/AIDS,“ said Tony Freeman, executive director of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation where the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative is housed. “Our local organizations – so many with rich and deep histories in our community – continue their work to serve all those impacted by HIV/AIDS, and to provide education and prevention tools to our larger community. We are committed to ensuring that they have the funds they need to continue to offer these vital programs and services.”

The grantees are: Being Alive San Diego, Bienestar, Christie's Place, Comite Civico del Valle, Deaf Community Services of San Diego, Eunime Por-Tijuana, A.C., Family Health Centers of San Diego, Fraternity House, Jewish Family Services of San Diego, Mama’s Kitchen, North County Health Services, Operation Samahan, San Diego Foundation for Change - Strength for the Journey program, San Diego LGBT Community Center, San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, San Diego Youth Services, San Ysidro Health Center, Special Delivery San Diego, UCSD Owen Clinic and the Vista Community Clinic.

“It is so inspiring to award these gifts each year to some of our region’s most important and essential HIV/AIDS service organizations,” said Dr. Delores A. Jacobs, chief executive officer of The San Diego LGBT Community Center. AIDS Walk San Diego is a program of The Center. “We are truly grateful for all those who help make these grants possible – our dedicated AIDS Walk walkers, volunteers, supporters and sponsors and the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative. In a year as difficult as this the grants these supporters made possible are critical for these agencies and those living with HIV/AIDS.”

The 21st annual AIDS Walk San Diego is set to take place on Sun., Sept. 26.

AIDS Walk San Diego is San Diego's largest one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser and the biggest non-governmental financial provider for HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Dozens of agencies -- serving thousands of clients -- rely on funds raised at the annual AIDS Walk to help provide essential prevention and care programs to thousands of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

The mission of the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative is to pool private funding and allocate those funds in a collaborative manner to HIV/AIDS related services in the San Diego region and is a program of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation.

Dear Friends,

I am writing to invite you to join me in making a holiday gift to The San Diego LGBT Community Center. Will you make a contribution today?

Over the next weeks, nearly 6,000 San Diegans will come to The Center for help, support and services. They will be of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds and they will all be counting on The Center. Some will be facing a health crisis, some will need a referral, some will come to a support group – and some will just want a safe place to be and not feel isolated during this time of year. I believe it is critical to make sure The Center has the resources to best serve our San Diego community during this time. Will you help?

This year, I have made a special commitment to The Center. I am trying to raise $6,000 in support of the 6,000 people who will seek services during the holidays. Since The Center serves the full diversity of the San Diego LGBT community, I believe this is one of the most important gifts I can give. I hope you will help me meet this goal by making a generous contribution today. Go here to make a gift right now.

As a former Chair of The Center’s Board of Directors, I know personally that your support of The Center makes a tremendous difference at the end of the year. This year, donations are especially critical to some of The Center’s most vitally needed programs like Senior Services, the Hillcrest Youth Center, Family Matters, Latino Services and more. Knowing how important these programs are for so many makes me want to do all I can this holiday season.

I hope you will join me by giving today. Your generous gift -- whether large or small -- will go a long way and touch thousands of people. Thank you in advance for your help and I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season.

Warmest Regards,

Councilmember Todd Gloria
