Atkins

Atkins Great advice from Jen Nelson about how to deal with birthday parties: "Take it from me, birthdays will come and go and it's not worth a piece of cake or a drink unless you know you can handle it and get right back on track. No excuses -- it's your life and you won't die if you don't eat the cake."

I put my two sons and daughter in law on Atkins. We are all at our goal weight and have been for years. At birthday parties we stand at strategic positions and watch everyone gorge themselves with cake and ice cream and give ourselves a thumbs up for having the discipline not to do so. And the next day there is no guilt and only the pride of being healthy and fit.

I was at my grandsons first BD party on Saturday evening and later at our friends house for dinner and the desert was sooooo enticing and then on Sunday evening I was at my daughters house for dinner and I was not able to eat a thing that was on the table so I had a cup of black tea with some lemon juice in it. I MADE IT ....BUT......IT WAS SO HARD!!!!!!

I think the take-away from holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc., is if you can eat it and KNOW it will not derail you, plan ahead. If you are like me and in the early days, one little taste of an unplanned carb or sugar containing food would do me in, I know myself well enough now to know that I can't "cheat" myself, which is really what you are ... See Moredoing. No one is going to care if you give in and have the cake, or whatever, but you cheat yourself if it leads to days, weeks or years before you get back on track. I've been there. I lost 51 pounds in 1999-2000 and felt great, but then life stepped in and handed me some curve balls, and I took my eyes off my dream, my goal - to have the body I was so close to having and here I am not only having regained the 51 pounds I lost, but gained 50 more. It's really, really not worth it.

I take a treat with me to parties or social gatherings where I am tempted by food. Low-carb, no sugar candy is usually individually wrapped and I can throw one or two in my purse.

I tell everyone I'm not eating sugar, then would feel really stupid if I did! So I don't....

My daughter knew that I was on this diet and felt bad, but I felt bad to not eat anything she had. I told her it was Ok and that I was fine. I had eaten a snack before I went for my walk in the woods before we got to her house.
