Metro Augusta Parent Magazine Which
explains why mine - and my parents' - generations weren't as
traumatized by the whoopins we got as people think we should have
been. It was the norm.

In NurtureShock , we described some extensive cross-ethnic and international research on spanking by Drs. Jennifer Lansford and Ken Dodge. Their data suggested that if a culture views spanking as the normal consequence for bad behavior, kids aren’t damaged

It is a personal parenting decision. I don't think there is a correlation between spankings and school shootings, however. We do not intend to spank, but we instill good morals and manners in our son. He is 2 and already says please and thank you, for example. I wasn't spanked as a child and I turned out just fine. My parents just got really creative with punishments...ha! Sometimes I wished I could get spanked just so I could get it over already.

Marty - I agree that it's not groundbreaking. From a social psychology perspective, it's been known for decades that anything outside the social norm can be traumatizing. But I think that they took those principles and applied them to spanking, specifically, is something new.

It sure won't settle the debate, though! LOL!

Metro Augusta Parent Magazine What do we think of this? The ethical dilemma raised in countries where boys are more greatly valued than girls is chilling to me, personally.

Parents usually have to wait until the end of the first trimester of pregnancy to find out whether they're expecting a boy or girl. But a new blood designed to screen for medical conditions reveals the gender as early as five weeks.

I find this article so interesting. The Dutch were not using the test to c what the sex of the baby was for the purpose of sex prefernce but rather for sex linked diseases. 5 weeks is so early. The people that would probably even take this test if & when it became available would b people @ risk. I'm sure it's expensive. It takes both mother and fathers blood. It's amazing to me how far medical science has come

For more than a decade, Aiken County students have been counting on IB classes to help them make the grade to get into college. While majority of the students who took the IB test passed, their final scores weren't enough to keep the classes from failing.

Metro Augusta Parent Magazine Millie Schumacher at The Family Y has a great tradition that she shared with me today. "Santa" brings her daughter just three presents each year, in representation of the gifts given to Jesus from the three wise men. She said that the tradition not only refocuses attention away from consumerism and back onto the reason... for Christmas, but it also forces a welcome limit on gift buying. After the three "Santa" gifts, all other gifts are appropriately marked as coming from mom, dad, etc. And, although she didn't say it, I think that also reminds children - who might otherwise thank Santa - to remember and appreciate their parents' generosity. What gift-giving tradition does your family have?

I do this as well - started it about 3 years ago - and it has gone over great with my kids - they get to appreciate and enjoy those 3 presents even more.
