As someone who've been working on Avid MC from its first released version, when it was very limited in comparison to today's models, I've tried almost every system from many competitors that was conceived since. I just wanted to have the best tools for editing without bias. None of the systems came close to Avid, mostly because of very basic ... Read Moreattitude mistakes. At a certain stage FCP was released and I was asked to cut a couple of jobs on it. This was one of the worst interfaces I ever came across. I felt that instead of being the extension of my brain (and gut instincts), the system tried to virtually block me and the editing flow. Nothing made sense and the whole work process was very frustrating. There were editors (mostly inexperienced) that loved it. They showed me FX and other cosmetic stuff but could not grasp why I got so annoyed while working on the simple trims and cuts.
Needless to say that both systems are advancing constantly and each time a new gadget is presented by one of them and makes some waves in the professional community. However, until FCP or other manufacturer will prove to me that it understand what EDITING is really about as an art form and craft, I stay loyal to Avid. [For FCP it's essential to get rid of the basic building blocks of the user interface and work it out from scratch (a hint: try an Avid). All the other gadgets are nonsense in comparison to this issue].
I must admit that today's new models of Avid deliver magnificent extra tools for an editor in both offline and online phases. They let you free your mind to creation and worry much less about technology. Take it from someone who offlined on VHS/SVHS or HB/LB "cut to cut" video and onlined in rooms that where more like a cockpit in terms of complexity, diversity and combinations of systems and components.
