Paintings from the Reign of Victoria: The Royal Holloway Collection, London:

August 14, 2009 – October 24, 2009

This exhibition showcases 60 extraordinary paintings illustrating some of the highest achievements in figurative and landscape art of the nineteenth century.  Acquired by Thomas Holloway to enhance the women’s college he had founded in 1879, the collection includes many of the most visible and praised “modern canvasses” in London in the 1880s.  From scenes of contemporary life, as well as historical events, to landscapes, animal studies, and marine subjects, the exhibition illustrates the Victorian belief in art as the ultimate civilizing influence.

Mirror Mirror: Contemporary Portraits and the Fugitive Self (October 23, 2009 – May 8, 2010): With the advent of social networking sites, cell phones, and YouTube, how we portray ourselves is always transforming. This exhibition will explore how we shape our identities in an expanding global society, and how living artists create artworks in an effort to discover who we are.

The First 100 Years: Collecting Art at BYU (December 4, 2009 – September 25, 2010): One hundred paintings, works on paper, and sculpture representing some of the key works from the BYU Museum of Art will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the university’s art collection.
