Marc Bertone

Marc Bertone Our new phone books were delivered today - 5 pounds, 11 ounces of uselessness. I did a rough estimate and I think 820 pounds of phone books were delivered on my block today, most of which are going right back into the recycling bin. At least people get some use out of a plastic water bottle before it gets dumped into... the bin, but the phone book is 100% waste for most people these days.

Bart Ours go straight into the recycling bin. Who uses these things anymore? One time, Mom was outside when they were being delivered and she told the guy, "No...just walk away and take your book with you."

Lisa Schubert Anyone else see the MythBusters segment on the incredible friction between phone book pages? Proposed new use: phone book paper as a chemical-free adhesive (aside from the chems used to process the paper. Hmm...).

Nico Sermoneta According to my mail carrier, the post office pays an inspector to follow mail carriers around when they're delivering this junk, to make sure it's not just dumped. There's another wasteful aspect of the phonebook scam. When I tried to opt out of delivery from Verizon, they told me that I could have them come and pic...k up the phonebooks that they had delivered, but that I could not opt out of future deliveries, because they are guaranteed the right to distribute them by NYC law.

Nigel According to Burn Notice, they make good impromtu bullet-proofing for cars if you fill the interior door panels with them. That's the only use I've seen in the last few years. Oh! And booster seats for children/height disadvantaged individuals.
