Born, July 5, 1801 to a family of Spanish and American origin. He was a flag officer, the first Rear Admiral (this postion was created for him specifically after he took the City of New Orleans), Vice Admiral, and full Admiral of the US Navy (He received his first command at the tender age of 12, a captured whaler ship...). And, he is one of only six other Naval officers with the honor to remain in active duty for life. His name and face are found in many places, from parks and stamps, to naval ships and academies named in his honor.
AND every saylor knows of his most famous words, "DAMN THE TORPEDOS... FULL SPEED AHEAD" which is a standard US NAVY saying/phrase AND AS SUCH... A NAVAL TRADITION.
