Bill White I spoke to a group of Christian clergy at noon today. They who gave me an award for work with various members of the faith-based community to improve the lives of others. Many of their comments touched me. The note posted on my wall below contains the words I shared with them, after several had publicly reflected on our work together.

Bill White What do you think of the analysis in the attached article about how to recruit and retain the best teachers? It bears on some observations made by Malcolm Gladwell in the post below.

I really enjoyed your discussion last Friday on education, and how we need to think out of the box to fix our school system. Thank you for all the work and time you have spent on this issue.

I like this article and believe it is a step in the right direction. As a teacher that became certified through an alternative certification program I can agree with many of the statements made about how teaching takes place today and how inadequat teachers remain employed.

To reply to a previous comment on this subject....education courses do ... Read Morenot teach you how to teach. It is a skill you either have or do not have. However subject knowledge and enthusiasm is crucial to student learning. Combine that with parental involvement and encouragement and you have the perfect recipe for student success.

Bill White What do you think of the attached article on hiring generally, and it particular about the way we hire and recruit teachers? I am proud that my son Will, now working in the campaign, will be working in a classroom next school year in Teach for America. Promoting and supporting excellence in the teaching profession must be a top priority in any community, state and nation.

This was an interesting article to read especially since I am a graduate/pre-service education student at UHCL. There is a lot lately on teacher quality and what is a quality teacher, which makes me wonder about my ablility to be that "quality teacher".
I don't think my university or any other can make a "quality" teacher in the true sense of the ... Read Moreword. The best they can do is give us all the information we need concerning content, curriculum. techniques of teaching but it is going to be me and my personal style that is going to make or break me.
As the article says, all the degrees in the world and high scoring tests do not make a great teacher. With that in mind, I am sure going to do my best when I get out there as I really want to be that "quality teacher".

Susan touched on part of the problem: knowledge of curriculum which is glaring at the lower levels, specifically in Reading.

Reason: Education Degrees in Elementary Education require a minimum of hours in Reading, usually no more than 3-6, if that, which I find sorely lacking.

Elementary teachers, in my mind, should have the equivalent of a Masters in Reading Specialization. ... Read More

It takes the entire school district to help a child succeed from Pre-K through 12 with changing variables at each level, for each class and for each student. You cannot teach a skill, OR a child in isolation effectively.

Bill White Houston has been the national leader in energy efficient housing standards. The EPA recognized last week that over 144,000 new homes in Houston have been built to EPA's Energy Star standard since the standard was created in 1995. Bill White This week Houston began opening 15 new plug-in locations for hybrid-electric vehicles, which get 100 miles per gallon. We could dramatically cut foreign oil imports through better fuel economy. See these articles from the Houston Chronicle and the New York Times: http://bw4tx.com/184.

The free market will solve the energy problem. Not a government bureacrat. I've read all the Ehrlich suppositions in Economic resource scaricity and depletion rates, and in their analysis they hold innovation and efficiency as static, which is the biggest lie of all and the basis of the largest scam perpetuated on man in history. Give an ant a brain and he'll think he's the center of the universe.

Even if you think climate change is a hoax, we still benefit security-wise from more efficient cars, which would curb our importation of billions of dollars worth of oil from hostile nations.

Thanks Mike Cash!!!!! most of us are in the middle of the political spectrum because we tend to be liberal on social issues but not on fiscal issues. I support gay marriage, abolition of the death penalty, and pro choice but I dont support wasteful spending and the current health care bill.

There is no final bill to like or dis-like. A bill is being put together for a final vote in both houses. If you have a problem with whats in it or not in it, say what that is. We are the only developed country without Universal Health Care. We spend more, yet recieve less. CEOs at three of the top five Health Insurance Companies made 250 Million ... Read Moredollars in salary, 2003-2008, a quarter of a billion dollars out of the money you pay for premiums. The wasteful spending in the current system is about to drive this country into bankruptcy as it does thousands of people each year. This is not liberal or conservative as some try to paint it. This is about decent healthcare for all, reigning in cost, and freeing healthcare providers to make decisions based on what they believe is best for their patient, instead of the insurance companies deciding what care you get based on what is best for their profit margins. The AMA and AARP support this effort. The AMA fought this for over sixty years but now realize that the system is not working, they have lost control to the insurance companies. As for government running healthcare, medicare is actually a great example of what the government can do. The problem with Medicare is not how it's run, they are more efficient than any insurance company, the problem is funding. Cutting social services is how those Bush tax cuts were partially financed, the rest of the cost was added to the national debt along with the entire cost of the Iraq and Afganistan Wars. PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT. Politicians are elected with your votes, when they know voters don't like something they pay attention but you have to let them know. This is your government if it doesn't work then it's your FAULT. Get up off your ass and fix it.

Bill White I am reading a book on the Texas Rangers. Some did good work in helping to suppress the KKK. A few years ago I was honored by an award a Ranger group gave me for my work with law enforcement. I had a great, great, great grandfather whose family bore my middle name, Howard, who was a Ranger and settled in Navarro County. The Rangers did some very hard work in the 1800s and along the border into the last century.
