Black Sheep Farms
I realized today that I am in a most fortunate position when I am outside on a winter's day.  For many years, I worked a job that required that I show up, regardless of what the weather was outside.  This meant sliding down slick roads and scraping and shoveling and watching the weather report at...

Black Sheep Farms

Black Sheep Farms Just had a small branch fall from one of our big maple trees by the house. It hit the roof, but it sounded worse than it was. However, if the icy rain weighs them down, and we get the 40-50mph winds that are rumored in the next few days, it could be very interesting. At best, we'll have a batch of firewood for next year.

I'm worried about that too. Our 70yo Silver Maple in the backyard is a prime candidate for a trunk-level split.

Moxie yesterday, LOVING the snowTonight, Brian and I rescued Moxie and saved her from a cold and snowy death.  If you are not currently in Nebraska, we are in the midst of a pretty nasty snowstorm.  Several inches of snow have fallen on the farm today and the wind is howling away.  Not the kind of...

Today, we got some snow. Not much, but it was enough to get the kids excited and to cause some changes on the farm. The birds didn't get to go out of the coop. They love to get outdoors and scratch around for bugs and other tasty tidbits, so when they don't get their freedom, they get upset...

Today, we will be eating our first farm-raised turkey. My sister-in-law is roasting it today, and I'm excited to bring this experience full-circle. In May, we received a batch of 15 Holland White heritage turkeys. By the time that we had them slaughtered, we were down to 11, and now we have four...

Having the turkeys processed last week was far from the end of our turkey journey.  Now we are left with 4, one tom and 3 hens.  If you read the popular book, 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle', you may recall that turkeys bred for commercial productions have had the natural mating ability bred out of t...

We got the turkeys processed this morning. Since they were so much bigger than the chickens and we are not equipped with things like killing cones, we decided to pay someone else to do it. They're in the freezer right now. I can't wait to eat one...

Things are finally settling down on Black Sheep Farms. We've gotten some time to recover from a busy year, relax and think about 2010. The Village Pointe Farmers Market ended in early October, and Kelly and I took a trip to San Francisco to see some friends...

Black Sheep Farms FYI - Omaha, NE - May have chickens in city limits as long as they are hens, no roosters, for egg production. Must have enclosure, subject to The Humane Society inspection, to apply for permit.

For Douglas County you actually have to talk to Health and Human Services. They will come out and tell you if your lot is large enough and if you need to make any modifications. We had to add in 50 feet fence to our yard to enclose it entirely. Then they come back and inspect the coop and give you your permit. You need to have the permit renewed annually.

No, I don't believe you can have lambs but a gal in Benson does have 2 goats!
