Bobby Likis Water 1: Gimmick, gimmick, everywhere a gimmick & do I get emails about "water for gas." I appreciate your trust in deciphering fact from fiction, so thought I'd give you a peek into my E-mailbag with this Q&A... Q: Hi, Bobby, I trust your advice implicitly, so tell me if you've ever checked out or tested systems tha...t use water converted to hydrogen gas to increase gas mileage. Thank you for any feedback. Bobby Likis WATER 2 (Answer): Ken, the concept of 'running an engine' on water is based on stripping the Hydrogen atom (H2) from the water molecule (H2O) using electrolysis. Although an engine/vehicle will run on hydrogen, much like many of Ford's Hydrogen shuttle buses, there are a couple of practical limits that prevents this from being a production solution.
Bobby Likis WATER 3: The first is that the 'cost' of the water/ fuel often does not take into account the cost of the electrical energy required for electrolysis. The 2nd is a matter of practicality. The vehicle has to have very large batteries to store the energy or use another method to create electricity (both of which could otherwise be used to power the vehicle).
Bobby Likis WATER 4: If hydrogen is created while the vehicle’s plugged into the wall, then there needs to be a mechanism to store the H2. In the case of Ford shuttle buses, the H2 is stored at thousands of psi in order to get a good range for the vehicle. If H2 is stored at low pressures, the vehicle will have a very limited range.
