Glimpse

As autumn trees shake
and fallen leaves make
pointed patterns upon your flower-showered forest floor,
allow that I should softly trespass your amorphous borders,
lest I miss the splashing light within, upon your kingly decor.

Forbid me, please, I ask,
to forget thy lofty teasings and laughs,
to forgive timelessly swaying hips which grip my eyes.
B'neath your table eating fallen morsels, like th' Syrophoenician,
I find your song a sweeter song than th' Sirens’ longing cries.

"A simple glimpse enraptures
this heart you have captured,
yet to whom can my thanks be known?" I moan.
Though you lived as if alone, you've heard and cured my lowing hurts,
without your knowing, to ov'rflowing, my chest stretching its cage-like bones.

Keep my swelling heart in place
with your warm embrace,
as you look to see how strongly your faraway grace has touched me.
Let me touch you, too, though you did not choose
to sow the seeds that grow, like sky-high trees inside me.

Though you did not try to love,
thin red butterflies above
have selected to rest upon your arms today.
You did not mean for me to see your browns and greens,
your shining yellows and flaring orange—
but I dare not look away.
