A man can be as happy as he makes up his mind to be. –Abraham Lincoln - About Me:
- Since coming to Congress more than 16 years ago, I have fought to preserve Social Security, cut the national debt, provide tax cuts for America’s working families, strengthen the military, and improve access and affordability to higher education.
Today, I serve as the Senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee. I also serve on the House Education and Labor Committee.
I was born on Sept. 9, 1938 in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the Tujunga area. I graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in 1956 and began to attend Brigham Young University. Following my first two years of college, I served a two and a half year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon my return I completed additional studies, but embarked on a temporary "hiatus" to start a family and pursue career opportunities before completing my degree.
In 1985 I returned to college to finish my degree, and was able to graduate from BYU with my oldest daughter.
Before coming to Congress, I served on the William S. Hart Union High School District Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1987. During that time, the city of Santa Clarita was incorporated and its citizens selected me as a member of the city council. It was during the city council’s first meeting that I was chosen by my colleagues as Santa Clarita’s first mayor. During my tenure on the City Council, Santa Clarita expanded its sheriff’s and parks programs and earned a reputation as one of the safest cities in America.
My wife, Patricia, and I have six children and 30 grandchildren, and we live in Santa Clarita.
