Exposure to noise in the workplace can permanently damage our hearing. But for some occupations and industries, there are other factors that can negatively affect a worker's hearing. Some of these factors include variations in the noise exposure, age, gender, race, general health indicators such as blood pressure and u...se of certain medications, and other harmful exposures. Several factors have been studied to try to understand why the occurrence and degree of noise-induced hearing loss can vary so much within a group and among groups.

This webinar will focus on ototoxic industrial chemicals, a potentially harmful exposure. Join Dr. Thais Morata of NIOSH as she discusses the effects of chemical agents, the interaction between these agents and noise, and strategies for preventing work-related hearing loss.

You will learn:

* the effects of ototoxic agents on hearing
* how audiometric testing can help discern between hearing loss caused by excessive noise and chemical agents
* the types of interactions of various chemicals and noise: addition, antagonism, potentiation and synergism
* the challenges involving exposure limits to chemicals for preventing hearing loss
* the characteristics of chemicals for predicting possible ototoxicity
* ways to protect your hearing, including a hierarchy of controls and new institutional guidelines and practices

Who should attend:

* Occupational health physicians and nurses
* Audiologists
* Industrial hygienists
* Health and safety professionals
* Managers, supervisors and health and safety representatives

Presenter:

Dr. Thais Morata is an audiologist with more than 25 years of expertise in the area of hearing loss prevention. She is currently at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where her main area of interest is the prevention of auditory effects of combined exposure to noise and chemicals in the workplace. A native of Brazil, Dr. Morata earned degrees in speech pathology and audiology and communication disorders from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (B.S.; M.S.) and the University of Cincinnati (Ph.D.).
