From the Washington Post review of "The Way We Get By," a documentary film about airport troop greeters at Bangor Int'l Airport in Maine. Come to the screening and filmmaker reception at CDS Friday night.
"No one comes home in a body bag. There are no dusty dispatches from Baghdad or Helmand province. . . . There are no... protests. There is no rhetoric. It's not that kind of war documentary. 'The Way We Get By' is about three people, not about military or political combat. It strikes a deep, rich vein of emotion that flows through America's elderly, and it should be required viewing for those who think they know exactly what America is about."Read More

A deeply moving film about life and how to live it, The Way We Get By begins as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about airport troop greeters. The film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling, and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war, and mortality. ...

Seeking out places in Durham where people shop on a daily basis, Jessica Silver takes her camera into spaces we know but seldom look at with consideration or care. A 2008 Duke graduate, Silver writes of her "Packaged" series: “I wanted to observe the spaces people pass through all the time but don’t really see.” Quietl...y moving through these stations of commerce and building the immediate trust necessary to make a picture, Silver brings us face to face with the complexity of color, the cacophony of advertisement and display, and the profoundly extraordinary nature of ordinary and mundane moments.

On October 1, Deborah Willis filled the CDS auditorium for a talk and book signing for "Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present."
