Very interesting story; also great pics of when the Berlin Walll came tumbling down -- an appropriate title might be "Wonders never cease"!

Interesting China story. But I have my doubts that a public out cry had anything to do with this. The Chinese are too pragmatic. I think some one got their toes stepped on and kicked back.

One of the reasons that I like this program is that we get to hear from different sides in a orderly manner. if you listen and watch carefully, you will observe that Fareed pushes his guests to answer hard questions, especially where human rights are concerned, and he will often offer a commentary outside of the interview if he does not agree with the views of the guest.

GPS is a news show that other news shows should aspire to: intelligent discussion with different points of view, smart topics, no "reality TV" antics.

Doubt it: in today's Global Village and Knowledge Explosion Age,
we're just too tempted to over-react, over-analyze, and
over compensate for just about anything, and everything!

Needed is a concerted effort to minimally "think" properly,... Read More
as research by Jungian Psychology in the MBTI evidences
that in fact, few really "think" properly! Talking is not
thinking, it is talking. And merely throwing data around
is jut that: throwing data around! Coupled to just too
much biased opinion, based on myopic ideologies!

Thinking is a skill that needs to be honed, and takes
time, a life time to perfect!!!

I agree with Matthew. The US Republican Party has become almost Libertarian in its attempts to "starve" government to death at all levels; Federal to local. While I'm not familiar with the ideology of European "social conservatism", I believe the US must find a middle ground or be torn apart by the extremist on both side of the political ... Read Morespectrum. Unfortunately, I do not see moderates seeking common ground and being willing to accept the "give and take" that is required of a diverse party. Much like the Democrats and Health Care; everyone wants their own rules or, like children, they threaten to take their ball and go home. Then, when they don't get what they want, like spoiled brats, they ruin it for everyone else.

President Hamid Karzai was declared the winner of another term in office as Afghanistan's leader Monday, after his opponent in a planned runoff election withdrew.

The interview with former President Musharraf of Pakistan today shed a lot of light for me, as to what is most important about Karzai. Because there is tremendous distrust in Pakistan about Karzai, there is little chance of serious cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan in defeating the Taliban. Without that cooperation, we Americans have ... Read Morelittle chance of defeating them by ourselves. In fact, the only reason there is any cooperation at all is because American interests are forcing it. Once we leave Afghanistan, the Pakistanis, rightly or wrongly, think it will become a ward state of India.

In this situation of intense regional distrust and suspicion, we have little chance unless we force that cooperation with Karzai as long as we are there.

In short, it does not really matter about Karzai. He is only a small part of a much bigger problem that we have little chance to solve.

Michael Smith

I must say I don't have the faith a lot of people have in China. It's good that Chinese are spending but the imbalances in china's economy are worrisome. Why is 6% growth considered a recession? Why are they continuing to import our easy money policy? Why is there so much waste and corruption and yet so much growth? Every one sings its praises yet ... Read Moreno one knows how it works. Let me be clear: I don't want china to fail. I just am worried that we might be fooling ourselves into thinking that china is the global economy's savior.

As for your question on Afghanistan and democracy. It's obvious to me that democracy as we understand it is only possible when there are democratic traditions on which to build and democratic institutions to uphold it. There is little of that in Afghanistan, and even imans who declare democracy to be anti-Islamic. I think it a better plan to build on local traditions in the countryside and protect the cities for a more free exchange of ideas.

It seems Fareed likes Karzai very much.I do not understand that.He has long time ago lost credibility, has shown how incompetent he is.Who really thinks that he can achive in the next year what he has not in the previous? He is a big part of US'problem i As .I see it there are two options:remove him by military force, occupy the country 100%,take over the rule-- or go home!!!!

Why has Fareed crowned Matthew Hoh as resident anthropologist on the Pashtuns? His analysis of the problem with the Pashtuns and civil wars is utterly flawed. The issue is not one of Pashtun identity but the Talibanzation of the Pashtuns themselves which needs both hard and soft power. Having studied the madrassahs that produced these people I can ... Read Moreassure you that there is absolutely no way to negotiate with the Taliban. The presence of US troops is there not just to defeat al-Qaeda but to prevent a nihilistic regime from regaining power. We have no choice but to persist there or risk the same that led up to 9/11. The reality is that we have already tried apathy and detachment and that gave us radicalization of both Afghanistan and Pakistan. For once we should be willing to have a longer-term vision of such conflicts.

Still, I don't want us to leave. We went there for good, if not sufficient, reason. We made certain promises, offered certain hopes. Then Iraq. I understand we can't win militarily. You can't blow the Taliban up and say it's gone away - perhaps select cities, some friendly tribal areas. Protect and build. Then slowly expand?

They don`t want our way of life! does everyone in the world have to live like us? If there is human rights violations, then let the islamic people address that,or the other world organizations responsible for those things. That is not the job of our young men and women!!!!The people who did 911 were already here, and there is still alot more here..let`s focus on here.

C'mon Fareed, this is a waste of your talents. In the 90's the Taliban flew to Texas to cut deals with Unocal and brought in foreign engineers to run their plants. Don't forget their press conferences on TV. So this YT channel shouldn't be surprising.
