Connecticut Forest & Park Association 10/25/2009 CFPA Annual Fall Volunteer Workshop

A group of 19 excited volunteers congregated in Penwood State Park for this year’s Fall Trail Maintainer Workshop. The leaves were yellow and the weather was perfect! Our focus was to restore and repair approximately 150 ft of stone steps on a 45- degree slope that were bui...lt approximately 100 years ago. Time and weather had made this part of the Metacomet Trail dangerous and virtually impassable.

The workshop was led by Gary St. Amand and his experienced crew leaders from the Ragged Mountain Foundation (www.raggedmtn.org). The crew instructed volunteers in the use of advanced high-line rigging techniques to move and position large rocks, often in excess of 150 lbs. With the assistance of cabling and Griphoist winches, the group sweated and wrestled rocks into position on the steep hillside. Over a dozen large steps were set and installed and the whole hillside stairway was contoured, repaired and restored.

We invite you to look up the map for the Metacomet Trail in Penwood State Park in your Connecticut Walk Book and enjoy the stone steps; the view from the top is spectacular any season. Near the bottom of the steps is the boardwalk to Lake Louise and more picnic tables.

Thanks to workshop coordinators Harry and Weezie Perrine for all their hard work in making this event such a great success.

Do you plan on doing another rock work project using the Griphoists and rigging? How did you like using them?

Hi Terrance,

Here's a response to your question from our Trails Committee Chair, Rob Butterworth:
This workshop was a trail project for CFPA. All the equipment and experienced crew leaders were from the Ragged Mountain Foundation (www.raggedmtn.org) We do plan on pursuing an “in house” capability at CFPA, but first we must train crew leaders and raise money to purchase the equipment and training. A winch set up (Griphoist winches, cables, shackles, chains, snatch blocks, web straps, etc) is in the area of $4K!

We enjoyed using them immensely-much less grunt labor than moving stones with just a rockbar and pick! A little more time consuming to set up properly, so you want to make sure you’re moving multiple stones from one set up. There is still a bit of physical labor to operate the winch when your hauling a load up a steep incline, but nothing like muscling a rock up it.

Peter Jodi Rell, and the General Assembly needs to rethink the doubling of parks and recreatation fees. How nice that this nonsence tax went through without too much public input. Sad part, the parks and DEP won't see a dime. It all goes to the general fund. New state slogan should be:

WELCOME TO CONNECTICUT the TAX YOU TO DEATH STATE

Sickening!

Janet Kipphut Ainsworth I'm going to be taking a group up to Bear Mt. in early November. Is there anyone who hikes it regularly that I can tap for trail conditions? The folks in this group are unlikely to own traction devices.

Richard We had a good day on the Case Mt. hiking trails yesterday. !3 Wesleyan students and Jason Whitehouse Joined CFPA leaders Bob Morrison and myself. We combined some work on the trails and some great hiking. All enjoyed the brisk weather and the colors of fall. Many thanks to the Wesleyan students for giving back to the community.

Terri Peters Hi, Check out this article about the new CT State Parks fee schedules. At least the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails are still free! http://www.courant.com/news/breaking/hc-state-park-fees-1009.artoct09,0,1233880.story

We didn't find out until we got to Sleeping Giant and were smacked with a $14.00 parking fee. We turned around. Nothing like being taxed right out of our recreational hike. We parked up the road for free and walked in through the back trails.

So much for no child left inside. Guess the general assembly doesn't want the poor to come visit their state parks.

Not to happy with the tax me to death state at this time.

Mindy Hello there! Any idea what is up with the blue-blazes on Rt. 372 in Plainville? I noticed them today while driving by and haven't had a chance to see why the Metacomet now seems to follow the road! Thanks for the help!

Thanks for noticing the change in the Metacomet Trail, Mindy. This reroute was done to move the trail from the busy RT72/RT84 overpass to a safer location. It has been rerouted to take more of the trail off the road. The new route (running south to north) now runs into New Britain and exits on Esther Streeet. It then turns right onto Black Rock... See More Ave, left on Wooster St and finally left onto RT372 where it rejoins the existing trail. The old section of the Metacomet which ended on a side street is still in existence, but it has been re-blazed with a blue/red blaze and now functions as an access trail. We hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy this new section of trail!

Nicely done. BUT, a couple of major entries for Shelton aren't showing up, and I know they were received because I got a call from someone at CFPA about them early on: Shelton Lakes Greenway (park) and Shelton Lakes Recreation Path.

Hello Teresa---Yes you are right, not all the submissions are on the website yet. The wonderful support and enthusiasm we have received for this initiative has resulted in a backlog of submissions. Please know we are working as quickly as possible to get all the submissions posted. Please let us know if any other questions come up. Thanks for your support and for being a part of WalkCT!

I have done all of the existing trail in CT & some of it in MA. It is a really wild trail, especially in northern MA. I saw moose sign in abundance & a porkie. On Memorial Day there our group saw NOONE else on the trail!
