California Waterfowl Some of our members have expressed concern about Federal legislation called the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009. This is legislation we are watching carefully, as it could impact firearms we use to hunt ducks and geese. Currently, the legislation has NO co-sponsors, and it does not have a ...realistic chance of moving out of committee. Be assured we will keep an eye on it. It is not a hoax, but it also is not currently a threat to our hunting heritage.

A bill before Congress would prohibit ownership of handguns by those who have not obtained firearm licenses?

Scary stuff. A lot of these gun laws seem to just be protecting us, but they all add up. The long term goal is totally outlawing them like Europe. But this one even sounds scary! Creating registration lists? Next stop, confiscation. And don't think it can't be done. It was already done. In 01/2000, my SKS hunting rifle was confiscated.

A hunter is much like the old Ford pick-up truck that he drives. In order for the truck to stay reliable, regular service is a necessity. In a really old Ford pick-up, this means keeping an old milk crate in the bed for hauling around extra oil, antifreeze and water, extra accessory belts, etc. Maybe even a tool box with some hand tools in it. Why ... See Moream I rambling on and on about my old Ford? Because a good hunter, just like a good truck, must be properly maintained. Living in Nor Cal offers up a lot of opportunity to do off-season scouting, so sometimes I find myself sitting out in the mud at one of the NWR's just listening and watching the birds, hoping to learn better decoy spread patterns or different calling techniques. My calls and my chocolate lab Whiskey are in my old Ford whenever I am, just like the milk crate full of oil ...

California Waterfowl would like to thank Grange Restaurant, their chef Michael Tuohy, and especially Hank Shaw for making this idea a reality and supporting California Waterfowl.

The dining room at Grange restaurant one night last week had an electricity to it, partly because it often does, but even more because it was a special, duck-filled evening.
