Yuko Nemoto

Yuko Nemoto Hi! Do you admit children living overseas to the Calvert Homeschool Curriculum? We live in Japan and I'm thinking to homeschool my 5 year old daughter using American curriculum. I like the Calvert Curriculum as it provides both online interactive programs and tailored hard-copy textbooks.
I also would like to know if th...ere are any children undertaking the curriculum in Japan.

OK; Have you check out our virtual catalog? It's the print catalog, but you are also able to flip through some of the books in the curriculum.

Check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/yal6ys8

Sarah Roscoe could you please reinstate the kids' encyclopedia britannica in the ilibrary page? I use it quite a bit for research and it is annoying to not be able to go on there.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the feedback. I just logged in to my MyCalvert account, and I see a link to the Encyclopedia Britannica site within the iLibrary.

I would contact Tech Support to help resolve this issue.... See More

You can email them at TechSupport@calvertservices.org

Thank you!

What I mean is, the link is there, but when I am on my account on the computer, the link goes through, but if I am on another account or computer, it says "sorry, we were unable to authenticate your access" or something like that.

Janice Stephens Lowder We have given up the block teaching , what started off well (we thought ) ended up costing us , a week of science , history ... in a day was just too much to get across , we are back to Calverts recommended schedual and are all much happier . We are still struggling with the details of history and science but it is getting better .

Christine Purcell Are there any Calvert virtual schools available to Tennessee residents? I talked to a Knox County school district official a few days ago who told me that there is at least one virtual school available in my area, but she didn't think it was Calvert.

Hi Steve,

Calvert does offer Re-Use courses. There is a page on our web site that explains the program and gives families a list of books that they must have in order to purchase a Re-Use course. The link is:

Janice Stephens Lowder Is anyone haveing trouble with 5th grade science ? We are haveing a hard time getting the point , I need to know if there is a better way than just reading the text and expecting them to remember the vocab and all the info given by the end of the lesson . I am wondering if we would fair better by spending more time on ...vocab , then reading the material , then going over the questions .

Hi Janice,

There are study strategies that can help a student retain the information that has been learned in a content area. One way that you can help your student is to become aware of how your student’s textbook is laid out. Take note of the vocabulary words that are in bold type and add their definitions to a vocabulary notebook or to individual flashcards for future review. Pay attention to the titles and sub-headings that you see on the pages in the textbook. These will help your student determine what they are getting ready to read about.

Take notice of the first and last paragraphs of each individual section. These will help your student identify the main idea of the section as well as any conclusions that were drawn. Your student may also find it helpful to highlight the main ideas in each section of the reading with a highlighter.... See More

For more ideas on how to help your student learn and retain information, please contact an Education Counselor. We have several resources that we would be happy to send to you. We can be reached by toll-free phone (1-888-487-4652, option 4) and email at edcounselors@calvertservices.org.

Thanks!

My daughter is in 1st grade so I'm not familiar with the 5th grade curriculum but we use flash cards for the science vocabulary words in her 1st grade book. It really helps her to retain the information. Also, since science is not included in the tests from Calvert for 1st grade we make up our own tests for science and social studies so we can make sure she is retaining the information. It helps us to know what areas she may need more work on. I hope some of that helps.

My daughter is in fourth grade and we have found using a vocabulary notebook to be very helpful as a study tool. And we also use flash cards in any subject where there are weaknesses.

Melissa Rincon

Melissa Rincon I really love Calvert because it is very thorough and my son is mastering everything he learns...a BIG difference from when he was in the public school system! We do one whole math lesson and any corrections from that lesson everyday. The only problem is is that this leaves little time for any of the other subjects. I ...feel like we are only doing math. Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi Kristine! It's comforting to hear that it's not just us! It's also comforting to know that it gets better! This is my first year homeschooling, so it really helps to have the support of more seasoned homeschoolers such as yourself and Nancy! Thank you very much for the advice!
