Abstract:
QUWIC at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) is a new applied research center established by Qatar University in collaboration with QSTP. Through its diverse programs and its focus on technology and product innovations, QUWIC will contribute to making Qatar a regional hu...b for wireless and telecomm research & development. In this seminar Dr. Abu-Dayya will talk about the drivers for establishing QUWIC, the operating model and its applied research and technology development initiatives. He will also discuss its overall role in filling a critical gap for translating ideas into innovative solutions that can deliver value and create local knowledge & human capital in the process.

Dr. Abu-Dayya has more than 20 years of International experience in the areas of wireless/telecomm R&D, innovations, business development, and services delivery at AT&T wireless in the USA and Nortel Networks in Canada. He was responsible for developing and licensing the extensive patent portfolio of AT&T Wireless. He chaired the Electrical Engineering Department at Qatar University before leaving to establish QUWIC, where he has been the Executive Director since Dec. 2008. He has many issued patents and more than forty publications in the field of wireless communications.

high school. It aims at informing students about the impact Information Systems Innovation can have in making businesses and organizations more effective. This year’s theme will be:
SUPPORT DIABETIC PATIENTS TO BETTER MANAGE THEIR CHRONIC ILLNESS
How Your Students Can Take Part:
We will hold a training workshop for interested students on Saturday, November 21, from 8:30 a.m. – l:30 p.m. at our campus in Education City. The students will learn about the competition and information systems. To attend, students will need to register online at http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/ibtikar/.
Ibtikar Qatar is a team competition and we would prefer as many team members to attend the workshop as
possible.
What is Involved:
Teams must be made up of a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 5. The challenge for the teams will be to come up with an innovative use of Information Systems that can help diabetic patients to better manage their illness. Among the issues that students will need to consider are the following:
1. Does the solution require new technology or a new use of existing technology?
2. What problems may arise in implementing it?
3. How practical is the idea, how likely is it to work?
4. Will it be economically viable, does it present value for money?
The competition will require teams to prepare and submit a poster (similar to a conference poster) which outlines their idea. On the day of competition, they will present their idea to a panel of judges. There will be prizes for the winning team.
