Very shameful...both of the elders and the preacher. Regarding the elders, I think one heck of an argument can be made over what "authority" they have. Last time I checked, all authority over the church is given to Christ. Christians are to submit to one another in love, not to some appointed "authority figures".

Good article! At the church I go to now, the majority of people are lower income so wearing anything beyond jeans would create an unnecessary difference between us.

The Christian Chronicle Getting a feature ready on Churches of Christ in India and the subcontinent (Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan). What is the appeal of Christianity in these places? Or is there an appeal? Anyone from any of these places — or anyone who has been there — is welcome to answer. Thanks! -- ET

I work with a former Indian citizen that is now an American citizen and a Christian. He tells me that many Hindus view Jesus as just another god and when they hear about Him they simply want to make sure they appease that god as well. So they simply add Jesus to their repertoire.

The above comment by Rose is only partially true there are places in India where Christians cant preach or even worship on a Sunday. The most recent gruesome attack targeting Christians happened in the state of Orissa, India in year 2008 with at-least two political parties backing it up. These attacks were not just limited to Orissa but also happened in Karnataka and Gujarat (other states in India).

Christian schools, orphanages, hospitals were attacked and burnt.Christians were gang-raped brutally and they didn't even spare young kids.To make matters worse the Orissa government called it a fight between two lower caste communities. There are people living in there who still are living in fear.If you google search on "Orissa carnage", you will find a lot of reports about the incident I am talking about. There are Christians in these areas who are still in need of food and shelter. These are the people of strong Christian faith.

Having said that, Christianity does also has strong foundation in the Indian sub-continent.We at Kakinada, AP India work with a lot of Christians,Preachers,Teachers across the state and the country. We preach on the Radio, TV and even successfully run a Bible Correspondence course. We get about 500+ responses per day asking for more material about Christ and His teachings. Some are just prayer requests. Some people just call in the middle of the night and ask us for a prayer over the phone which I have never seen happening in any other part of the world. After the above mentioned Carnage we were able to find air time on the radio to reach out to the people in Orissa. From the response we are getting from the people of Orissa we are getting encouraged to spread the gospel in that state more frequently.... Read More
