Circassiada is a project of Circassian Olympic Games to be held in Nalchik in 2012, during 12 days in 12 branches of sport— ...corresponding to the number of stars on the Circassian flag. Its motto is an old Circassian proverb ‘Kindness begets kindness’. The authors of the idea and the project are Sufian Zhemukho, current expert with PONARS’ Eurasia program and a former Fulbright scholar, and Aleksey Bekshoko, chairman of the Union of Abkhaz Volunteers.
The authors have planned to conduct 12 presentations of the project as well: six of these have already taken place in cities throughout Russia, including Moscow, St.-Petersburg, and Sochi, while the remaining talks will be held outside the Russian Federation: Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Sukhum, USA, GB. The first presentations were covered by Russian nationwide news agencies such as Caucasian Knot, IA Regnum, and Russian News Service. The authors of the project have written a book on the issue: ‘Circassian Olympics: Presentation in Russia’ with articles in Circassian, Russian, English, and Turkish in the book.
Since ninety percent of the Circassian nation is scattered across the globe, the main goal of the Circassian Olympics is to unify them around this event, similar to the goals of the Jewish Olympic Games Makkabiaha (since 1932) and the Pan-Armenian Games (since 1999). The first Circassian Olympics are linked in several ways to the 2014 Winter Olympics which will be held in Sochi, the last capital of independent Circassia. In addition, the 150th anniversary of the deportation of Circassians will be commemorated in 2014. The Circassiada will suggest Circassian elements (12 stars and 3 arrows) to be included in the Sochi Olympics in order to remind the world about the native inhabitants of the area. The Circassian Games will be held after the 2012 London Summer Olympics whose main host, the mayor of London Boris Johnson, has recently announced that his great-grand-mother was a Circassian.Read More
