Columbine by Dave Cullen
BOOK SUMMARY: I spent ten years covering Columbine, compelled by two questions: what drove these killers, and what did they do to this town? That's what I set out to tell.

Mr.Cullen-I was wondering if you can share some information or help me out. I'm trying to research more into the psychological side of Columbine. Like through Dylan and Eric's eyes. I know the world doesn't shed much light on it, but I feel their side is just as important. Oprah was to do a show about them, but felt it... would glamarize them. Well guess what,if Oprah won't I will. Can you help me gain information? Or share somewhere I could find it?Read More

I'm familiar with the show Oprah planned. hahaha. (I taped it with her, and agent Fuselier, and Investigator Battan. The episode was based on my book.) For the record, they pulled the show because of the anniversary--after that, I'm not completely sure.

It's hard for me to answer without referring you to my book. I'm pretty biased, but I think it's the best psychological profile out there. Most libraries have it.

There are also all sorts of sources linked at my Columbine Guide: http://davecullen.com/columbine/columbine-guide.htm... Read More

There is also a 15-page bibliography in the back of my book, or an abbreviated version of it here: http://davecullen.com/columbine/bibliography.htm

Columbine by Dave Cullen Interesting update on In Cold Blood, exactly 50 years after the murders.

It begins:

"Fifty years ago, Holcomb, Kansas was devastated by the slaughter of a local family. And then Truman Capote arrived in town . . ."

I wonder what Jeffco will be like 50 years from now. Very different situation. Columbine was infamous long before my book. But I do wonder about the long, long run.

In the heat of a breaking story, news media frequently run details which later turn out to be incorrect. One case in point: it's recently come out that it wasn’t actually civilian police officer Kimberly Munley who shot down Hasan, as initially reported, but rather another officer, Sgt. ...

Kathy, the same thing makes me insanely curious. I think Janis is right: plus, it's the first story we heard, so most of us believed it. What puzzles me is people who want to continue believing it after the truth comes out.

Sioux, that makes me happy.

Dave you're right about how the rumors that come out during the first 24 hrs., are the ones that seem to stick. I think we're all getting a different view of this terrorist now. He was so bold as to have S.O.L. printed on his business cards. (Soldier of Allah.)

Oh, it sounded live, or maybe live to tape, but I forgot to ask. I did one teaser question right at the top of the hour, and then a couple about five minutes later, in the main body of the segment.

I had all these notes ready, and references in different windows--didn't need any of them.

My heart breaks for her, she should write a book but people would critisize her. Now if we could only hear from Kathy or Wayne.

It makes me sad. I have read it. :( Well see if we hear from Eric's father, it might start a riot of some sort. Because he called during the attacks, stating he knew Eric was involved. Why didn't he call before if had any suspicion at all? He bagan to believe Eric over his wife anyways, it's all in a 20 page journal called 'Eric.' He wrote everything there.

. . . the tragedies that have beset the Hokie nation since 2007 prick wounds from that terrible time more than two years ago when the community's sense of security was shattered by Cho. Now, every time there's a new tragedy, it "brings back those same gut-wrenching feelings," Sitz said.

I had just finished the media chapter critiquing Diane Sawyer and Brian Ross, when I hear on my television Diane Sawyer throwing the story of the Killeen shooting to...Brian Ross. I have a degree in Radio/TV, and always bought whatever Good Morning America was selling. My eyes are open a little bit more today Dave Cull...en.
LOVING THIS BOOK! I was in Austin last week and my two colleagues (from Rockwall High School) heard your lecture. I bought the book too and read out loud during our 4-hour ride home.

Thanks, Liz. I'm watching the news reports much more warily than ten years ago, too. Although I think they are being much more careful, for the most part, which is heartening.

I wish I could have met you, but it was great meeting your friends, and glad you got ahold of the book.

Dave, I wanted to share my thoughts with you about vicarious trauma at Fort Hood.

What are the causes behind the Fort Hood shooting?

In the media's scramble to understand the "whys" behind the Fort Hood
tragedy, a great deal of discussion is being paid to the fact that the
apparent shooter was a Muslim. While I... am unsure of how, if in any way,
his faith played a role in what happened, my thoughts go in a different
direction. I wonder about the vicarious trauma that he must have faced
counseling at the largest military installation in the U. S.
