Happy Winter Solstice! The weekend storm sure made the arrival of this year’s winter solstice dramatic. This year's winter solstice occurs precisely at 12:47 PM EST.
Winter Solstice occurs exactly when the earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun at its maximum of 23° 26'. For the northern hemisphere, today is ...the shortest day and longest night of the year as well as the sun's lowest position in the sky (from our perspective). Going forward, the days will begin to get longer and the nights shorter until the Summer Solstice, which occurs June 21, 2010.
