Just read a wonderful little quote from the Chase Garden newsletter. Ione Chase on Gingko Biloba: "it's lovely in the fall; all the leaves drop at once. I like that. the fallen leaves make a lovely groundcover." My thought is if we all could see fallen leaves as "lovely groundcover" rather than just another fall ...chore to clean up. Take a walk outside for more favorite fall finds. Even in the drizzle of rain, the Pacific Northwest season change brings its own unique patterns and texture against the wet, dark soil.Read More

Yes! This year the poplars have provided a golden carpet. I liked it so much, raked up enough to cover a new garden area and continue to enjoy the bright color during the dark wet season. Ironically, my husband noted how nice it was that many of the leaves collected in the one spot. I did not have the heart to tell him Mother Nature had a little help!

Creative Gardener The pondering of squash?

Source: www.thenewstribune.com
Oct. 21, 2009 - As I was in line to pay during a recent trip to the grocery store, the customer in front of me was buying acorn squash. This time of year, they are piled high in produce bins alongside the multicolored gourds, ornamental corn and mini pumpkins.

Creative Gardener Thinking of fall yet? The days are drifting to shorter lengths and the late bloomers like Japanese anenome, Rudbeckia and crocosmia are really showing off. Here is Sue's latest "In the Garden" newspaper column on fall veggie planting.

As we pass the intensity of the summer growing season, it doesn’t seem to be the time to think about planting vegetables again. Yet mid-July to mid-August is the time to plan a crop of vegetables that will extend the season of fresh edibles for fall harvesting.
