Mazel tov! on your 1st bat mitzvah. : ) Been watching c-span tonight & am proud to say that I survived Boehner's closing speech. Ashamed to say that I very nearly devolved into some sort of Joe Wilson-esque caricature while trying not to throw things at the tv. I only hope people are paying close attention. Did you hea...r Rep. Markey (Mass.) talking about The G (grandstand) O (oppose) P (pretend)'s pre-existing condition? It's a stone heart: kick them in the heart and you will break your toe. C-span has never been so entertaining!Read More

Now replace the water & electricity providers with health insurance providers. We know we need this sort of coverage. People cannot be expected to just make-do as best they can and then take on the entire cost of their care if they should have an injury or serious illness. Insurance is necessary, but at what price? Is it only for those who can ... Read Moreafford it? Do we have to expect people to make a decision between heat in winter or continued health coverage? If you've never faced any sort of crisis that stems from the cost of medical care, count yourself as fortunate so far. But there are plenty of people whom rock bottom has already visited because, for whatever reason, they lost their coverage. To just say, 'we're an ownership society - you're on your own' is not going to make this problem go away. And neither will 'getting rid of the horrible insurance companies'.

Whether or not your neighbor can afford the health care coverage that you have is not really even the issue. Yes, it's part of the problem, but it's more symptomatic rather than the cause. The biggest problem facing our collective economic rebound is the fact that the larger companies cannot afford to compete while at the same time shouldering the ... Read Moreburden of expensive health coverage for their employees. The most obvious examples of that fiasco are the American automakers who have been driven to the brink of their existence. Part of their plan to survive has been to let a lot of their work force go. But go into what? They can't just walk over to another manufacturer and get a new job because nobody is hiring. They can't move to a new location because they have a house, but the price of it has dropped through the basement. They can't sell it for what they owe & even if they could, who'd be looking to move into a neighborhood where all the jobs have been drying up? Before long, that former auto worker is getting rid of every expense that they don't just HAVE to pay at the moment - health insurance being the first to go because they need to eat and the need to stay warm in winter. And then they're in the unemployment line, needing benefits paid for by taxpayer dollars. Take a good hard look at Michigan. Should we be trying to do all we can to stop that scenario from radiating out to other parts of the country? Or do we take a wait-and-see stance? Will it help if we get rid of the insurance companies? Introduce tort reform? Taxpayers and people who have insurance coverage are going to foot the bill one way or the other. The question is: are we going to pay for preventative care or emergency care? Just sayin....
