Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund

Vicky Betancourt

Vicky Betancourt I am physically disabled and suffering from P.T.S.D. caused by Domestic Abuse thanks to my husband. The abuse is so bad I have lost my idenity. I don't know how to get it back. He refuses to give me enough money to pay my bills and buy food. I am lost and beaten down. I am NUMB. There is no help for people with disabilities.

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund Madonna uses the R-word freely in Rolling Stone this month: “I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like ‘Cherish’ and ‘Sorry,’ a pretty big hit off my last album, end up being the biggest hits,” she tells RS. ” ‘Into the Groove’ is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.”

Madonna has never been widely known for her attention to the nuance of her language--or her disability rights awareness. Disappointing.

Saying "retarded" in the sense that she does reflects the limitations of her language. It's not so much about being PC because she certainly isn't, but it is about choosing a less pejorative term.

we must be more vigilant that ever in these tough times, that those with disabilities are not treated inhumanly...and it is only by the spirit of love in all its strength this will be overcome... man has always been willing to call the life of some,,, less than dignified in how they are treated.

I think that there should be a requirement to have video cameras in special need classrooms to prevent this from ever happening again. Districts should also consider having all aides go through periodic psychological assessment in addition to training.

Anna, I think that is a great idea. And every classroom should be as open as any regular education classroom. Transparency, cause once that door shuts...trouble begins.

When is someone going to bring the lawsuit that says that state budgeting must be based on ethics, equity, and level of need, not "these are the programs that costs the most, so let's cut them first". I spend a lot on rent, but can't "cut"out one day a week of paying it and make my children homeless--but the state can cut IHSS and send many ... Thank you, Judge Wilken, for standing up for those who so need to be protected from budget decisions that treat every line item as equal in the process. And thanks, DRC, for the work you do.

I will see if I can make it. It would be really stupid to cut this. It would force my client into a home at $3000-$4000 a month instead of $300 a month for me to help her. She is 88 yp and her social worker wants to put her in a home but for her life would be no longer worth living. The new regulations and changes narrowed the list of providers and I am the only one left on the list now as a registry provider.
