Below are links to articles valuable in understanding the role education plays in economic development. A broad vision of economic development must consider education and the role of the business community.

Contrary to popular belief, Rula Lenska never said, “Don’t hate me because I am beautiful.” (it was Kelly LeBrock).
Speaking of beautiful, Downtown Red Wing was certainly that this morning. Red Wing-ites woke up to a beautiful first snow dusting this morning.
It really gets you into the holiday spirit, doesn’t it?

Is Red Wing a Creative Class community?
‘Creative Class’ was a term coined by Richard Florida, a noted urban sociologist. Many economists project that communities that build an economy based on “design, education, arts, music and entertainment, whose economic function is to create new ideas, new technology and/or crea...tive content” will thrive in the near future. Cited cities include; Austin, TX, Palo Alto, CA and Rochester, MN.
Why do some cities thrive while others flounder? How can a city best position itself to thrive? What kind of jobs does Red Wing need to attract to thrive?

So what exactly is a "Downtown"? The term was originally coined when speaking about the southern tip of the island of Manhattan as a center of culture, commerce and social gathering places. By the early 1900's, "Downtown" was a recognized term in speaking of the historical core of a city (which was most often the sam...e as the commercial heart of the city back then).
Why is Downtown Red Wing unique? Most core Downtown communities struggled and were largely abandoned in the 1950’s and 1960’s as the suburbs prospered. But Downtown Red Wing never stopped being an authentic Downtown community, partly by virtue of location and partly by community commitment. It has evolved, but it is still a core of both culture, commerce and social gathering.
It is what it was and it still is. And then some.

Last Monday night the Red Wing City Council voted 7-0 to adapt the Downtown Action Plan (‘The Plan’) as part of the City Comprehensive Plan. This essentially means that the Downtown Action Plan is formally part of the long-term strategy for the City of Red Wing.
A quick Q&A:
1) Does this mean the plan is funded? No, h...owever a funding framework is part of The Plan.
2) When will The Plan be executed? The Plan includes 35 action steps, some are easy, some are hard and will take many years
3) Where is more information available? Call the DTMS office at 651-385-7850 and ask for a copy of the The Plan.

You have now had your breakfast, done some shopping, visited the Festival of Trees...your Downtown Red Wing Holiday Stroll day is shaping up quite nicely.
Clearly you are getting hungry again. So let's talk food for a moment; hot roasted chestnuts, kettle korn, almonds, mini donuts, cotton candy, pulled pork sandwiches..., apple cider, cheese curds, onion rings, bread pudding and chili.
'nuff said. See you on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Your 2009 Downtown Red Wing Holiday Stroll continues…
You have had your breakfast and you have visited the merchants. Now head over to the beautiful historic St. James Hotel and check out the St. Brigid’s Festival of Trees on the 5th floor of the hotel.
The public is invited from 3 pm – 6 pm and a silent auction for the... trees begins at 7 pm.
Hors d'œuvres...and not just the 'weenies on a toothpick' kind either!

Can I just say, I know I am only one voice, one person, but this one person absolutely detests the Christmas lights on the buildings downtown. Particularly the fact they have to remain up year round.
All the beautiful and well-restored architecture downtown and the roof lines are usually the most intricate and decorati...ve part of these buildings yet one can't even take a decent photo of them because of the ugly wires/bulbs/cords.
Just seems like for a town that in most respects tries to honor the historic, traditional, river-town feel, the lights are a modern, gaudy, and decidely 'sore thumb' element?

Ok, you finished your Elks Lodge pancake breakfast and your Downtown Red Wing Holiday Stroll day continues...
Work off some of that delicious meal by visiting any of several downtown merchants who will open their doors at 9 am. The store decorations are beautiful and there are many shop local opportunities at terrific ...values.
Notice a difference already?
The doors do not open at 4 am like other anonymous big-box malls.
There are no stampedes.
Fellow shoppers are pleasant.
Customer service is patient and polite.
You are a person, not a mob.
Am I in Heaven? No, this is Red Wing.

What's going in Downtown Red Wing soon? Hmmm...something right after Thanksgiving? Damn, it is right on the tip of my tongue. What could it be?
Oh, right. Just a little something called THE DOWNTOWN RED WING HOLIDAY STROLL! Yeah, that's it.
Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Red Wing Downtown Main Street h...osts the entire community to a day-long series of events designed to remind people why the holidays really are special.
It is all about family and having fun together as a family.
Think of The Holiday Stroll as the real alternative to the mall mentality.
Every day between now and The Holiday Stroll, look for fun things going on during The Stroll.
