    Mozart and Beethoven inspired generations of classical composers, but who inspired them? For one, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the first black composer to lead major French orchestras. In 1779 Saint-Georges performed with Queen Marie-Antoinette.

      • Lillie Edwards Richard Alston, classical pianist, performed a wonderful program at Drew a few years ago. The performance-lecture was entitled "Classically Black." The senior recital of one of the first African-American studies minors at Drew, Shelia Slappy, included a program of "art songs," vocal pieces that set Harlem Renaissance poems and black issues to classical music forms. Yes, we are indeed a global people.
