Gene Quisisem

Gene Quisisem is discussing - Once we figured out that lead paint and asbestos were hazards to our health, we eradicated them from our buildings. Mercury is toxic in any form; every fluorescent tube and CFL bulb contains it. Will mercury be the next toxin to be ousted from our built environment?

Great point GENE.Only time will tell and what scientifc backing that come out. There has to be an evidence that mercury level in the buildings are causing harm to the people. There has to be a cause and effect..

LED lighting is likely well on it's way. Once the economies of scale take effect, LED lighting will end up being much cheaper than florescents.

Pulled this up recently...

BusinessWeek (10/1, Capell) reports that Phillips, the world's leading lighting company, "is banking on new, energy-efficient LED bulbs to win business in this growing market," and is already "working on making LED more accessible to consumers. On Sept. 24, Philips was the first to submit an entry to the U.S. Energy ... Read MoreDept.'s $20 million lighting competition. The contest is aimed at developing an affordable LED replacement for the common 60-watt lightbulb." Philips Lighting CEO Rudy Provoost has called the transition away from incandescent bulbs, "the most profound change the industry has witnessed since the invention of the electric light." To that effect, Phillips has spent "$5 billion over the past five years on acquisitions in large part to expand its LED business."

One way to conserve energy and productivity is to try eliminating government travel by having mostly virtual meetings.

This may also help to increase productivity by minimizing peoples' exposure to one another on airline flights, etc. which would usually act to help transfer disease faster.

As a former Air Force pediatrician I would walk thru our clinic at the end of the day shutting off the lights. The cleaning people could always turn them on later. I still turn off the lights when I walk out of mycurrent office to see patients in the exam rooms..

Hey US EPA, saw your tweet regarding the WV DEP going green. I think before you go any further the WV DEP should view the following youtubes as ask themselves if they help or hurt the environment. Please note that this West Virginia Agency provides a written permit for this company to do their dirty. Shame on the WV... DEP.

Don't understand what I'm talking about, look at the following videos:

our ofice of 10 people uses the can/bottle recycling bin in my office. Every Thursday I bring it home and a neighbor comes around and collects our recycling for the Camp Pendleton Marines. She and her husband have raised over $1000 so far. I used to go through the stands after the local high school football game and would collect $10- $20 worth of cans and bottles after each game to benefit the Marching Band.

Francisco's new composting initiative is certainly progressive.
However, I was wondering whether the EPA was researching
how composting affects the concentration of pesticides, preservatives,
etc. If composting conventional and
processed foods concentrates potentially toxic material rather than biodegrading
it, then that doesn't bode well for the initiative. Just a thought.
