Very good story on NPR this morning about dairy CAFO's. "Across the country, big dairies are coming under increased criticism for polluting the air and the water. In New Mexico, they're in the midst of a manure war." http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121173780

What about meat? These days, approximately one third of cereals and grains produced in the world go towards feed for livestock (meat, egg and dairy sources). Meat production is very inefficient in terms of land use. The more meat we eat the fewer people can be sustained through arable land.

OK, her content can be good, if you are 'that' sort of person, which I can be, especially in the kitchen. However, I'm not taking the time to blowtorch candy to melt into stainedglass for my gingerbread cathedral! Are you? She is trite, she is a b***** (sometimes! - admit it) and she can be vapid, but shes loved and she has something to say and as ... See Morefar as I'm concerned, if poeple listen, then shes a conduit to pass along a message! And I agree Clare, if she had been a man, she wouldn't have done any jail time...I believe that!

Agree with Amy; moreover, lots of people listen to her and follow her lead, so if she's even recognizing vegans it will be good for animals.

This is the kind of dialogue that Eating Animals was meant to inspire.

Jonathan Safran Foer and I hold nearly the same beliefs about eating meat. That said, I have a freezer full of goat necks, marrow bones, and pork belly, and he decidedly does not.

And all animals feel pain, otherwise they really wouldn't exist at all, its the ultimate survival instinct. Fire kills=avoid it. I don't breathe air=avoid it. Lightening is scary=avoid it. These instincts are built in to all animals, us included. The pain instinct in us is inherant in all animals, at least acknowledge that.

There is plenty about this article that not only makes sense, it makes logical sense. I may not come to the same conclusions that Josh has (I'm a vegetarian and have been for 20+ years), but I can still see what his thought process is and how he applies it.

If people are looking for inconsitancies because they don't like the conclusion, then a lot of plastic using vegans are in for a long debate about killing-by-proxy, because no one is exempt from justifying their actions. No one.

I just started reading it yesterday and am going to re-think my purchasing power. I live in the Vermont/New Hampshire area and Vermont was mentioned in one of the first chapters as being a state that could possibly 'restrain animals' for slaughter. I also live in a rural community that is incredibly inundated with organic this, organic that... See More...... and that is my lifestyle....but I know the % involved in needed to claim 'organic' as well. Believe me, I would always eat organic (and mostly do!), it's just that "organic" only has to be 75% - 95% depending on the food and how the FDA labels it (vitamins? steak? chicken? milk?)
When I read about the night/day thing with the laying hens.... the male chicks in the wood chipper......arggghhhh! really, who can continue supporting that type of business?

I'll agree that no slaughter can be really humane, as it ends in death, but wouldn't you support a system that would provide a more natural life for the animal? If you are a traditionalist, wouldn't you like to see individual family farms control our food supply instead of corporate mega-companies?
