End Tiger Trade

End Tiger Trade The Chinese State Forestry Administration, which is responsible for wildlife, issued a document allowing trade in legally obtained tiger and leopard skins in December 2007, but with such little fanfare that it barely rated a mention in the domestic media.

The world’s dwindling population of tigers could be pushed closer to extinction after China quietly approved the sale of products extracted from the endangered animals.

Really bad news...although I admit this was not totally unexpected. After all, there has been some semi-covert trade in China concerning tiger parts even when they had the domestic "ban," although it was supposed not to be done.

End Tiger Trade Tigers aren't safe anywhere. On Aug 22, zoo officials in Jambi's Taman Rimboo Zoo discovered that Sheila, the Sumatran tiger, had been killed and skinned on zoo grounds after being drugged by poachers, leaving virtually nothing behind except the innards and a few ribs of the animal.

Tiger trade is prohibited internationally and banned domestically in all of its range countries, including China - historically the largest market for tiger products. These bans have successfully shut down tiger trade and nearly extinguished demand.

It really is about local involvement in the end. Indeed, Eric is right about protecting the tiger in the wild. Captive breeding programmes are useful as a hedge against extinction of the species (although not protecting them from being extinct in the wild), but they cannot replace protecting the tiger and his habitat. However, getting the locals involved and getting people to see that the tiger is worth more alive than dead are what matters in protecting the great cat.
