HOUSTON -- A silent rally is planned next week to support a gay student who was beaten because of his sexuality, KPRC Local 2 reports. Wednesday, November 25, 2009.

I am an administrator for a school district and I have a lot of questions concerning this incident. If the scenario was a white boy going to the administrators asking for help because nine black boys were going to beat him up, would they have reacted and behaved differently? If so, then there is a problem. If not, then there is still a problem, but a procedural problem and not a prejudicial problem.

Here is the bigger issue: School districts in Texas to not include sexual orientation as a protected category in their non-discrimination policies. Many other parts of the country do. Boston Public Schools has a very well written non-discrimination policy. Most Texas school districts simply default to the state law in the education code and do not appear to be willing to step up and write a non-discrimination policy that is morally right even if beyond minimal requirements in the Texas Education Code.

Technically, sexual orientation is NOT protected in Texas schools and administrators and students have no legal requirement to step in to protect gay students. Gay students, gay teachers, and gay administrators can be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation in the state of Texas.... See More

Gay people can be fired because they are gay in the state of Texas.

Gay people can be denied housing because they are gay in the state of Texas.

Texas did not step out against slavery and only ended slavery when they had to, which wasn't even at the end of the civil war. Texans figured the slaves couldn't read so they didn't tell them they were free. June 19th is a celebration in Texas because that is when the slaves found out they were free.

As a Texan I am very distraught thinking that Texas will not take a stand against discrimination of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) people until they are forced to by U. S. law. Why is that? Why do we have so many people in this state who hang on to discrimination and discriminatory practices until the very end?

Well, what do you expect? We have a governor who is encouraging secession. It's pretty pathetic.

We also have a governor who wrote an entire book (or claimed to anyway) praising the boy scouts for keeping those pesky faggots out.

Oh my, that is a high number. I never hear anything on local news about TG murders, this needs more media coverage.

Great Q & A with Parker, but where's Gene? He's refused to come forth with tax returns, he refuses to clarify his conflicts of interest, and now is a "no-show". We need a Mayor we can trust, not a lawyer who dances around issues and apparently cannot handle direct, tough questioning (or feels he shouldn't have to). Clearer each day that Parker is the stronger candidate BY FAR, and the Houston Chronicle thinks so too! (Sun. Nov 22nd issue)

Paul-You've described the situation here in Houston 100% correctly. The bigots/religious right are spewing all sorts of hate. We knew it was coming but that doesn't make it any easier. I hope all supporters of Equality Texas will consider going to www.anniseparker.com and help us make Annise Parker the next Mayor of Houston.
