FELA! Today in 1986: Fela at the Fox Theater in Detroit

Source: yearsagotoday.blogspot.com
Fela Kuti is a towering figure in afrobeat music, and African music in general. One of his many nicknames in his home country of Nigeria was The President. He never was the president, but he was very active politically, mostly as a critic of governments domestic and foreign. ...

FELA! Great article about FELA! on Huffington Post by Marc Gabriel Amigone from The Afrobeat Blog: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/modiba/fela-pumps-new-life-into_b_349014.html

Whether you're an abrobeat fanatic, or you've never heard of Fela Kuti before, FELA! will knock your socks off.

Not so great article considering the untruths in it. Fela was not sent to England to study medicine. He clearly stated in the Carlos Moore biography that he convinced his mother to send him to England to study music at Trinity College London, from 1958 to 1962 (p.61, 2009 edition)

Secondly, Sandra Isidore did not expose Fela to American funk or any music for that matter. Funk was all the rave in Nigeria before Fela ever set foot in the US. He came to the US as part of an effort he had started years earlier to dissassociate himself with funk and create his own unique musical identity.

When I interviewed Sandra in LA last year, she was very surprised that people were spreading all this news about her teaching or exposing Fela to any music. She was more surprised about the overblown assumptions that were being made about the "James Brown" inspiration. She seemed fed up with the falsehoods and begged me to use my interview with her honestly.... Read More

It is great that Fela and Afrobeat music are finally getting all this attention which is rightly deserves. But let us do the great icon true honor by carefully researching what we write and circulate about him. I doubt very much that Fela, if with us today, would appreciate being misrepresented.

I saw the play and I too agree that the biography said nothing about going to the UK to study medicine. I wondered about that.

Brother Fela's life story isnt difficult to piece together accurately. This is just an example of lazy journalism, but as you say, its good that the genius of Fela and his contribution to musical expression is beginning to get the widespread international recognition they deserve.
As someone who dabbled around Fela when I was a rascally schoolboy back in the mid 60's I could never understand where the story of the James Brown influence came from!!!

FELA! Here's an article reposted from 1999 about David Byrne on Fela Kuti and the music that inspired Talking Heads

Source: www.arthurmag.com
So…in Talking Heads there’s a song we did called “The Great Curve” [on the Remain in Light album], where we tried to do a Fela-type groove and then kind of take it in another direction. There are some sections that are straight Afrobeat riffs and stuff.
